1965 30' instument panel
How do I get to the back of the instrument panel of my 31' SeaSkiff? The access panel at the bottom doesn't allow me to get to the back of the instruments. I'l like to check and possibly re-wire the panel.
I have a 1964 28'.I think the panels are the same. From inside the cabin(on my boat, above the sink in the head)remove several screws and the base of the istrument panel can then be removed. This might give you access.I actually can reach up inside the "box"containing the instruments.Good luck!

Sounds likely however the helm on my boat is backed by the stove and sheet metal heat sheild. I'm afraid I'll have to take off the heat sheild. the instruments are basically in a cabinet which also has the wheel attached and the engine controls on top. It looks like a fairly big job.
Re: 1965 30' instrument panel
The more I thought about it the more I think you should be able to access the instruments from underneath the helm cabinet that the wheel and engine controls are attached to and that the instruments are set into. The cabinet is attached to the bulkhead. On my boat there is a pedestal with a footrest on it that is attached to the bulkhead and extends from beneath the cabinet to the deck.It contains all of the wireing, throttle and gearbox cables and stearing shaft.Does your boat have this pedestal? I can reach up under the "box",there is no bottom on it,and get to the instruments. Is yours completely enclosed? If it is and there is no way to remove the bottom cover then you would have to remove the entire cabinet from the bulkhead and I think the screws come through the bulkhead from the galley in your case.Is it possible your instrument panel is hinged in any way to the cabinet it sits on?If I can figure out how to get a digital photo attached to this site I'll send you a picture of my helm.

Ther is a foot rest built into the cabinet. There is also an access door but it is way below the instrument panel and the fuses are atached to the door along with the info plate on the original engines. As far as I can tell the whole cabinet will have to come loose.

I had to do some extensive re-wiring and ign switch replacment on my 64 express 30'. single 427. the helm cab comes off by loosening the screws behind the galley cabinet. remove cabinet, remove screws from back of galley wall, this will release helm cab.
