2003 Bow Buck 11 Pointer 225 lbs

                                        “Bad Year”
Well here it was October 1st, 2003 on a very beautiful day! It was about 65 degrees for the high that day. When I arrived at my stand I climbed up and took a seat, it was about 6:00 before I saw anything. I sit and listen to see if I hear anything coming and then boom out of nowhere a 15 point monster appears. By the time he was in shooting range it was now to dark to shoot. I went out the next day, October 2nd, 2003 and hunted a different stand knowing that the stand I am hunting now I never go home without seeing at least one deer so I stayed prepared. It was about 5:00 p.m. now and I look to my right and see corn breaking and moving. When I stand up to see what it is I cannot tell. When the deer exited the corn I noticed it was a very nice buck, but couldn’t tell how many points he had. I was hoping he would come my way but he hadn’t. About 30 minutes later a doe came walking out behind me and I tried to stand up and something fell from the bottom of my boots and she walked back in the woods and came back out somewhere else. When she came out again I tried to draw on her and she busted me, yet she still stayed in shooting range. She came back a third time and I said this is the time when I will shoot her. Well, I drew back my bow and when I did she just stopped and listened for a few minutes, by the time she started moving again my arms were becoming extremely tired. When she got in range where I wanted her I was getting ready to let the arrow fly, I had a sore dry throat and had to cough! I couldn’t hold it in! When I did she looked up at me and blew. After that I thought I was going to have a “Bad Year”. Well, I came out the second day now very excited to have the right wind blowing to hunt that same stand. I climb into my stand and sit and listen. Its now 5:00 p.m. again and here the corn moving, but this time its not behind me. Its in front of me, so I prepare myself for a shot. When I look out in front of me I see a very nice 12 point buck staring in my direction. I wait for him to come into the path and in my direction. When he enters the field I stand up and get ready to draw. He is now about 75 yards away from me and I draw my bow back. I say when he crosses im going to take him, so he does about 25 yards in front of me and I let the arrow fly. A solid hit I think, yet I listen for a crash and hear a faint one. I climb down from my stand very quietly and exit the area and decide to wait about an hour later. I return home and let everyone know that I think I got one. So we organize a small search group and return about an hour later. When we first arrived at the stand location I was very nervous because we were not finding any blood or the arrow. When a friend of mine walked about 15 feet from where I had shot there was blood all over the corn. I knew then I had a good shot because the arrow did not smell like a gut shot. We continued to follow the blood trail with blood on the corn above our head, he was bleeding out both sides. Finally we come to a point where we find my broken arrow and I know I got him here somewhere. We continue walking about another 10-15 yards and there he is! A 300lb 12 point monster! I was amazed to see how big he was because I wasn’t paying much attention to his rack. Right then there we field dressed him and took him out of the field. It took 3 people to drag him out. When I arrived home everyone congratulated me and I was very excited to get my first deer with a bow, having a rack and big body was just a bonus I would say. The next day we take him to get checked in and weigh him and he weighs in at 225 lbs field dressed. Come to find out it’s the biggest deer taken off the property ever. I couldn’t be more happier and the season wasn’t a “Bad Year” like I thought it would be!
And that is my story! Hope you liked it!
