Anchor Chain Bung
Peter Foston of Khamis was particularly keen to find a permanent solution to the problem of water entering through the chain pipe and was pleased to hear my answer.
The material to use for the Bung is Marineseal 033, costing about #25 for 5 Kgs, enough for half a dozen bungs, not to mention the usual purposes, such as resealing ports windows etc. The material is in two parts that are mixed and set very slowly to form a rubbery compound. It can be bought from 34 Aston Road, Waterlooville, Hampshire, Tel 02392 251321.
I used what I had left after sealing six windows in a Twister, to make a bung. I formed the putty mixture [very like plasticine] round the anchor chain, wrapped the shaped putty with a plastic bag, pushed it firmly into the chainpipe, leaving some slack in the chain above the pipe, pressed down around the edges to spread it out to the outer edge of the chainpipe to form a good seal and left it to set. Both ends were rounded so they would not catch more than a little on the bow roller, anchor winch etc. The bung does not leak, runs over the winch and bow roller easily, is a convenient indicator when lifting the anchor that it is above the waterline, is visible in the water because it is white, even when the anchor cannot be seen and after using it in the Twister and a second one on the Nic, has not deteriorated at all and not a drop of water goes below apart from the water actually on the chain.
Petersuggests I patent it, but I think we should all put a bit in the kitty for a Charity, such as the RNLI.
Fair winds and good sailing.
