Appalling!!!
Ok... so I found this article, it is about a man who was arrested in the US for wearing a 'Give Peace a chance' shirt. Can you believe that???? This is in America, home of Freedom of Speech, Land of the Free etc etc.

It's ridiculous!

Viggo needs to be careful I think!

The truth is out there...waiting to be discovered

Yes, Nora. You can not hate the people just because their president (voted, right) is STUPID!.
You know what? Aznar (president of spain) IS THAT SON OF BITCH (yeah, son.of.bitch!) that is involving Spain in the war like the states, and WE DON'T WANT!. And I'm sure so many countries have exactely the same problem. I don't want to be judged for what that man say "spanish" say, because THAT'S NOT TRUE!.

SPANISH PEOPLE DON'T WANT WAR!. So Spain DON'T WANT WAR, say whatever the president says: SPAIN WANTS PEACE!.

Re: Appalling!!!
Hmm, that link isn't working for me, but if indeed someone was arrested for the words on his shirt, things are getting worse than I thought.

Bush scares the crap out of me, but even scarier is the mass hysteria I can feel building in the US in the general population. There is a strong intolerance for any opposing viewpoints, and it's not just coming from the government. It's my neighbors, my hairdresser, the postman, the store clerk...it's everywhere. Walk into a bar and tell someone you oppose the war and you could be risking physical harm. People I have been close to for years have stopped talking to me since I revealed my stance on the war.

It's freaky, to say the least. I'm still proud as ever to be an American, but I'm worried about the direction things are going for us. The Bush administration is quietly passing laws restricting the rights of individuals and increasing the right of the government to invade the privacy of its citizens, all in the name of "the war on terrorism." These laws could have potentially devastating effects on the democratic way of life in the US, yet the voices of few who have spoken out have been quickly and efficiently muffled.

I admire Viggo and Karl for taking such a strong and public stand against the war, and I'm glad they've managed to avoid the extremely hateful reaction the Dixie Chicks and Roger Moore suffered for their heartfelt comments. No one should have to tolerate death threats for voicing their opinions.

Re: Appalling!!!
I think perhaps because it's an old article it is no longer there.

I just find it amazing that actors like Susan Sarandon and the likes can get black-listed like they did in the cold-war. I mean, hasn't the world changed at all since the 1950s?

I am curious though, how did Viggo and Karl get out of that? I mean, their stance has been just as strong (if not stronger, look at all the Japan pics) as the rest of them, why aren't they black-listed? Are they playing it down?

Re: Appalling!!!
I think part of it is that they did most of their public protesting in Japan, not the US. Also, they didn't use as wide a public platform as the Dixie Chicks and Roger Moore did (Moore did it at the Oscars - that takes balls!). Karl is not an American, and Viggo has long been left-minded politically, so it didn't come as a big shock to anyone. The Dixie Chicks have a fan base that is very politically conservative, and so their statements rankled with the fans. Meh, that's my take on it, anyway.

And you're right - America hasn't seen this kind of paranoia about "the enemy" since the McCarthy days. *shudder*

The US government has done some truly terrible things in the name of "democracy" in the past, and it's a shame we're moving back in that direction again...

I see your point.

Is there a Michael Moore too? Or is that the same guy?

Oh, you're right, it's Michael Moore, not Roger. Sorry.

That's cool, I just thought I was losing my mind :haha

What is the name of the President in (is it West-wing?) that is/was really against the war?

No, you weren't losing your mind, I was just having a senior moment.

I don't watch the West Wing. All I know is the actor that plays the president is Martin Sheen.

Yeah I don't watch either (therefore not being positive on the name of it), I just knew that he was black-listed as well.

I know, it's just ridiculous to discriminate because they have a difference in opinion. I mean, what is the point in trying to 'free' another country when 'yours' isn't much better? It makes no sense.

Re: Appalling!!!
You're right, it doesn't make sense, and the reason it doesn't is that the US government doesn't really give a damn about freeing anyone. It's all about politics and economics. I wish they would just be honest about it.

Cripes, are we really supposed to believe we're in Iraq to free the people from their dictator? If that's the case, why aren't we freeing all the other peoples downtrodden by malicious dictators? There are dozens of them, just as bad and some of them worse than Saddam. The difference is, those countries don't control something of value to the US...

Absolutely agree with you, Aery! Absolutely! I'm embarassed to say that US only will free you if you're sitting on oil - I mean, I get in trouble for saying this, but how come the US quickly seized and protected the oil wells in Iraq, but let the hospitals, schools, libraries, and museums be looted in Iraq? Inhuman sense! Doesn't make sense at all! No wonder we haven't dealt with N. Korea, who really had those weapons of mass destruction, unlike Iraq - they don't have oil!

That's what really worries me. When people get hassled simply for taking issue with the government's actions, to the point that they become hesistant about voicing their opinions, democracy begins to die a slow death.
