Burglars and intruders.
We are a little slow off the mark with this one but what about the right to legal protection of burglars and intruders.
This is in light of the latest on the farmer who shot the kid who broke into his house. He's not apologising and he's staying in prison.
how much of a legal right should someone have once they break in to your house?
MY VIEW:
Breaking into someone's house is a crime, and is an attack on you even if you are not physically injured. Speaking from experience the psychological effects of having your home (your place of relaxation and security) violated are horrible. Whether they mean to steal your possessions or harm you even kill you they deserve to be punished. But do they deserve to be killed?
If they intend to steal I want to be able to catch them with a high quality security system and hold them until the police come. If they intend to harm me then it's them or me. I sleep with a large kitchen knife beside me when I'm alone and I feel I should have the right to use it.
But this is in a clear cut ideal world. Life is never so simple.
Most people can't afford lavish security systems.
How much time do you really have to gauge an intruder's intentions?
The farmer shot the kid in the back. Was that the best way to deal with the situation? We'll never know the full story but if he was running away was the farmer in any danger? The farmer has the right to revenge but was killing him really the right kind of revenge? Surely the punishment should fit the crime. Or do you think it does?
Anybody has the right to defend themselves and their property if they end up in a situation where they are under threat. As this intruder was shot in the back it suggests that he was maybe trying to get away, as you said. So in this case it should be manslaughter as he was in no direct threat. On the other hand if the intruder came at him with a knife then its a different story but why did he have a shotgun in the first place...ok he's a farmer but guns are supposed to be locked up and unloaded. OK he may have got it out but still. We will never know what happened before he was shot so it is hard to judge the situation but I would certainly defend myself and my property.
Re: Burglars and intruders.
I grew up a few doors down from a scroat that broke into some guys house and was attacked with a knife. The tendons in his arm were severed and he sued his victim and made a @#%$ load of money. The same bastard went around the street telling people that the best way to pull off a burglary was to be knifed in the attempt because you made more money.
Ever since that I've instinctively believed in the right to defend property but I prefer the american way. In the US women are taught to KILL burglars because if they injure them they get sued. If they die it was a self defense killing.

bizarre
That's @#%$ up.
But not as @#%$ up as someone attacking you and then you having to pay them for defending yourself.
I think that when killing someone is the first port of call there's something very wrong with the law.
"If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy"
this counts double for intruders and thieves

My Grandmother, Is An 80 Year Old Very Good Natured Woman, Who Will Do Anything For Anyone.
And She Has Had People Breaking An Entry To Her Home On Several Occasions, First The Pound Meter On The Television Was Stolen, Then Her Purse And A Photo Book, There Wasn't An Awful Lot Of Money In The Purse, But There Was Cards, And The Photo Book Had An Incredibly High Sentimental Value.
Last Week, She Was Watching Coronation Street, And Because She Is Hard Of Hearing And Refuses To Wear A Hearing Aid, Someone Came In Her Back Door And Stole Her Microwave, This Was In Day Light, I Am Unsure Of The Time, Possibly Between 7:30 - 8:00pm, So It Was Still Light.
The Police Was Informed, A Neighbour Seen The Scum Who Done It And Was Able To Give A Name And Address...But The Police Seemed To Do Nothing About It, But If I Ever Catch The Ones Who Did This...ALL HELL WOULD BREAK LOOSE, I Would Go Ape @#%$, But Then I Could Be Done For GBH...For Protecting A Timid Elderly Pensioner From The Scum Youth That Terrorize The Weak And Mild....I Do Not Agree With The Law This Country Has.

the vulnerable
My friend's elderly parents recently had their car stolen from them during daylight hours. His dad, who is partially disabled due to a stroke, had dropped the car keys outside the house and some little @#%$ picked them up and drove off with his car.
Recently another friend of mine's uncle and aunt had their car stolen one night. It was returned the next day accompanied by a note of apology, a full tank of petrol and a 'peace-offering' of two tickets to the theatre. My friend's uncle and aunt then decided no harm was done and went on the night out to the theatre. When they returned their whole house had been emptied. Cold and calculating.
We should probably do something about this.

Welcome in, Haemophage.
I don't know I haven't seen it.
It just goes to show that they're right when they say that movies don't create psychos, they just make psychos more creative.
