CHECKERBOARD - IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Dear Members Of The Checkerboard,
As we all look forward to a new season of Checkers hockey in October, I just wanted to thank everyone for their participation throughout the 2004 Season, and for keeping this board active during this off-season. While the Checkers are finalizing their move to a new office, and most distinctly, a brand new arena, we, the Administrators, are getting ready to make a move of our own, one that will be beneficial to Checkers fans and hockey fans alike.
What are we talking about? On August 1, The Checkerboard will be leaving ezBoard and moving to our servers at checkersfan.com and an excellent bulletin board program called VBulletin. Ice Chex recommended the program to me at the start of last season, citing the example of the Reading Royalty message board and how well organized they have it (You can check out what we mean here). I agreed and work began on a new and improved version of THE Checkerboard. Belfast Giant hosted and provided support for the test version of the new board. Ice Chex (with input from BG and I) worked very hard during the last several months customizing our new board.
We believe you will all be pleasantly surprised by it's new graphics, it's new features and, most importantly it's reliability (which is WAY better than ezBoard). There are MANY new features offered by this software--far too many to go into right now, but one feature is that you'll be able to choose from avatars we provide, or you can upload your own. This board does not require you to host images somewhere else, like ezBoard does. Also included are calendar and FAQ systems. Plus, in addition to our current forums, we'll have some new forums for you.
Since this new software is not part of ezBoard, when we go live, unfortunately your memberships will not be transferred to the new board. Therefore, you will be required to reregister on the new board with your birthdate and a valid email address. Membership is very essential here, as you will not be able to read all of the forums without logging in. Lurkers are still welcome and posting isn't obligatory, but we hope this will maybe urge you to participate. You can be invisible, if you prefer.
Registration will be a 3 step process:
1) you register your ID. You will be sent an email with a link
2) you click the link to validate your registration
3) the administration will activate your registration
Once the third step is completed, you will be able to read and post in all the forums.
We are still in a testing and finalizing state, but we should be ready to move on AUGUST 1, 2005, and that's when the link will be provided (If this changes, we'll keep you posted). Between now and then, we encourage you to continue posting here, but after that date, this board, and all threads will be locked. We will keep the board around for quite a while for you to read. We apologize that we will not be able to transfer all threads over to the new board, but we'll copy the threads that are tacked to the top of this forum.
Check back frequently for further news and information on our move to a more dynamic and reliable message board service. If you talk to someone who has not checked the board lately, be sure to tell them the news.
We are very excited about this move and the features it will offer you and we hope you'll be as excited as we are once we are there. Many surprises await you. Again, thanks to everyone for making The Checkerboard a great place for fans to hang out.

Steve, Alan, and Warren have been kind enough to let me run some tests on the new board and see how things work....to iron out the kinks before the masses get there. You guys will like it, the 3 of them have done a great job.

I have to admit that im very excited for everyone to see the new board, there have been MANY headaches to get it in the condition it is now.
I think its gonna be a lot easier to get around compared to this board, looks a hell of a lot better too!
Single click and you can see the new posts from all the forums.
No more restrictions on pictures posted on there or multimedia (within reason)
ack there are loads of functions on there that i think you will all love, and most of all, we control everything in there including backups of the main Db so we will not have to go through the ezboard fiasco again.

Well I'm hyped already....great build-up guys! You've already done a great job considering what ezboard gives you to work with....and with all the new goodies it sounds like will be available, the new sight's gotta rock. Looking forward to Aug. 1....and here's an early Congratulations & Job Well Done! (how's that for blind faith?).

VBulletin has an import/export utility (impex) that has EzBoard listed as one of the boards it will import from. I have not personally used it since all of my VB sites were started from scratch. It may be worth a look. I also believe that some user data can be moved if so desired. VB is good stuff with lots of hacks/mods to do just about anything. There is also a really nice chat prog that intgrates fairly seamlessly with VB (FlashChat). Can't wait to see the new board. Good choice! -Dave

Wireless/Text Messages?
Just wanted to put a bug in someone's ear about someone possibly setting up something where after a game the Checkers score will be sent to cell phones/blackberries, whatever. I know it sure would be nice for the road games when you can't be around a computer. Possibly even limiting it to road games as most of us will be at the home games.
My only worry is that we get junk pages...but if we limit the messages to Final scores (and who scores), plus maybe trade/aquisition news.
Just something to think about...I am not sure how to set it up, but thought someone might know....THOUGHTS?
