Can someone help me ? I just finished the books of Lord of the rings, and in the Return of the king, almost in the last part of the book Frodo is leaving with bilbo, Gandalg etc , but is he leaving to die? or just leaving , with bilbo and gandalf becouse of the ring he carried and he sufers from nightmares and start to get sick the time he spend on the shire, I was wondering this becouse, Sam said to him I can go with you, and he said no at least no right now,you still have a lot of time even if you carried the ring too. If you can help why is frodo leaving, exactly ? Oh and please tell me if frodo is leaving to die?
Cool question Nora....
I don't have idea. When I read the book I thought Frodo was leaving because he was not good for living in the Middle Earth. I mean, the Ring has destroy him as much, as he is turnning into one Gollum thing.... like Bilbo. They are bad because they have wear the Ring for so long that it has transformed them... They can damage people on Middle Earth... But I dind't think they gone for die. Just they go with the elfs, because they are the ones that can help them into their .... mmm... "problem"---
Re: Can someone help me ?
Well I'll try to explain it as best as I can, well how I see it anyway!
Ok firstly, Frodo, Bilbo, Gandalf etc. are actually going to The Undying lands where the Valar live and where there is no evil. So no, they are not going to die.
Frodo tells Sam he can't go yet because he knows that Sam wants to have children and still isn't ready to leave the Shire.
He says to Sam,
'Though you too were a ringbearer, if only for a little while. Your time may come. Do not be too sad, Sam. You cannot always be torn in two. You will have to be one and whole, for many years. You have so much to enjoy and to be, and to do.
It also says at the very end of RotK that after Rosie dies Sam does go over to be with Frodo again.
Next....Frodo says,
'But I have been too deeply hurt, Sam. I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: Someone has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them.'
I think that is a really beautiful paragraph. He is not physically hurt, but mentally hurt and the only way to cure that is to go with the elves to the Undying Lands.
It also says that Legolas and Gimli eventually go to the undying lands, but Merry, Pippin, Aragorn, Arwen, Faramir, Eowyn and Eomer all eventually die... which is really sad.
Re: Can someone help me ? Thanks so much for your help Saura and Vadas , the thing is that the part you said of Sam going with Frodo at the end of the book dosen't apear in the book I read , I wonder why?, dosen't mention that part becouse they put that part of everyone else dying and I think the translation was very faithful to the original , but I'm very happy to know that Sam and Frodo are together in the end and Frodo didn't go to died , that book is sad enoug without Frodo diyng, I really hate that rosie girl becouse I really saw her as and impediment for F and S could be together, I love the part when Frodo said well when are you moving to my hause Sam, and he said well Mr.Frodo I'm going to marrry with rosie or something like that and F said well you can all live in my hause It's me our they have a tresome going on there maybe not all the babys are from Sam , but Sam prefer Mr .Frodo right?
Re: Can someone help me ?
I said in the other board that Tolkien wanted Sam and Frodo to be in love... truely love. But he thought that his society should not understand a gay-love.... it was his time.
But I read (don't remember where) even that, Tolkien wanted to show how much Sam loved his master and how much Frodo love Sam.... he "hide" it into a master-servant love... but all of us must admit that sam-frodo love is MUCH MORE than that.....
Re: Can someone help me ? Saura you are 100% right , sam-frodo love is MUCH MORE than that..... I think most people would agree, I agree, is like impossible not too.
Re: Can someone help me ?
Exactly. I'm sure there is something more to it.... and even if Tolkien didn't actually intend it (which I think he possibly did) we can still read it like that if we want! Thats why I love stories!!

Totally right, Vadas. That's what make stories no-timeless (is it said that way?)... they don't have time... even when you read something does not mean that some others read the same... You know that "Alice on Wonderland" was created as a fairly tale for little children, and that actually our society see it as a book for under 13?....
