Checkers Announce First Player for 2005-06
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Derek Wilkinson, Head Coach and General Manager of the Charlotte Checkers, announced today that the team has agreed to terms with Phil Aucoin (oh-COIN). Aucoin (5-10, 185, forward) is the first player to join the Checkers roster for the 2005-06 season.
“Phil’s a kid who was a late bloomer but comes to us highly recommended,” said Wilkinson. “He was the leading rookie scorer in the Central Hockey League last year and we look for him to bring a lot of speed and goal scoring to the team.”
Aucoin, 23, joins the Checkers after spending the 2004-05 campaign with the Memphis Riverkings of the CHL. Last season, he ranked 10th in the league in scoring and first amongst rookies, finishing with 73 points (25g, 48a) in 58 games. Aucoin also served a two-game stint with the Providence Bruins of the AHL last season recording two assists and two penalty minutes.
“I’m really looking forward to playing in Charlotte,” said Aucoin. “Charlotte is a great organization from their connections with New York all the way down. After talking with Coach Wilkinson, I really felt like this was the best place for me to take the next step in my career. [Wilkinson] is a player’s coach. Guys enjoy playing for him and that makes a big difference.”
Originally from Chelmsford, Mass., Aucoin played attended Norwich University where he played in 110 games recording 136 points (45g, 91a) and 88 penalty minutes.
wow...sounds like he should be a good player for us. A guy who scores and obviously doesnt put himself in the penalty box much, so he'll actually be playing mostly. Anyone know anything else about him? or seen him play or heard anything else?
Re: Checkers Announce First Player for 2005-06
im pretty sure his brother is forward keith aucoin who played 5 games with memphis last year too (4-5-9) and played 72 games for the providence bruins (ahl) (21-45-66, 49 pims).

Sounds like the kid is a lot like his brother. His brother -- Keith -- is Theo Fleury size, but is always in good position. Plays smart hockey.
If Phil is anything like his brother you have a real good pick up here.

Yea!!!! Our first player! I hope this starts a snowball effect and we start seeing loads more being assigned.
Aucoin sounds promising. I'm not going to hold my breath though. Proof is in the pudding (or whatever the heck they say).
Let me also say, I miss all you guys!!!! Hope you are having a great summer!
Cheers!
