Re: Checkers To Host Equpiment Mega-Sale
I think one piece composite sticks are going to be $50. Goalie and wood sticks will run less, but I can't remember for sure what I was told...

$50!!!! I thought I heard at one time that it was 'bargain' prices. I know they pay a lot for the equipment and I heard that they went way over budget this year on sticks, but come on!!! It's not like any of us are going to play with them. Oh well, I am going down there on Friday at noon to try and get the first picks...I'm sure I will come away with something.

$50 IS a bargain for a one-piece composite stick considering the going rate for that stick is about $150. And actually some of us DO play with them. You would be surprised to know how many people buy some of these items to actually use.
See you at noon tomorrow. Prevent Defense PREVENTS you from winning.

I was waiting for someone to ream me on that comment...I guess it goes back to whatever the old saying is about not speaking on things you don't know about, being that I didn't know what sticks go for and that people do play with the equip.

Re: Checkers To Host Equpiment Mega-Sale
It costs me $40 to fill up my truck, a bottle of water is $1.50, prostitutes are way more expensive than they used to be, and composite sticks are $50. I was thinking this morning they should do away with the quarter and reintroduce a smaller 50 cent piece. Hell, dollar bills are almost worthless (by themselves anyway) these days. Seems like most everything is going up in price....except of course the service I provide my employer.

Okay, so since my knowledge is rather limited, can anyone tell me what the advantages are of a composite stick rather than a wood stick? And what is composite material anyways? This may be totally off and a little funny, but when you get a filing at the dentist they say it is a composite, is it sort of the same material?
Re: Checkers To Host Equpiment Mega-Sale
Yes, a new topic in another forum. Seriously, composite usually contains aluminum or graphite, if I'm not mistaken. They are far far lighter. Huge difference in the weight of the stick.

Like possum said, usually composite is graphite (aluminum would surprise me) and it is MUCH lighter than wood. Another thing about it is that it "gives" more than wood. As we learned in physics, when the stick bends, it has energy in it that the stick expends when it comes back into it's normal shape. So, when you slap the puck with a graphite stick, the puck is the recipient of that expended energy. Carolina Kidders plays hockey, so maybe he could confirm some of this and explain other reasons for us.
I have no idea on the filling materials.
Of course, Coasterholic14 would tell you that there is NO advantage over wood since these teams break on AVERAGE, 20 sticks per game!

Yes, I think you should have asked it in the form of a poll. Prevent Defense PREVENTS you from winning.
Yes Graphite is much lighter and withstands more force than a wooden stick. They do still break, but not as easily as wood did. some of the older composites had removable blades since they tended to break easier than the shaft. So when the blade broke, you heat up the end, pull out the broken one and put in a new blade. I even had one that was wrapped with kevlar.
Those are even going away for the full composite. But just like wooden sticks, they start to "loosen up" and flex more with age which some players don't like, so they get retired and we as fans get to buy them.
Does anyone know if any of the ECHL goalies use the composite sticks, or do they still tend to "stick" with the wooden ones? Possum???
WARNING: Actual attendance may be higher than it appears!
Re: does anyone miss...
I've not seen a composite goalie stick below the NHL level, but I'm not a stick expert or anything (technically I've never seen one in person). I heard some NHLers used them, but I can't remember who. Turek, maybe? I know Belfour's always been on the cutting edge of technology like that, maybe it was him.
