Choosing A Character / Applying
Choosing a character

You may take characters from the book, but remember that you must play them realistically. As i mentioned; i dont want Evil Remus just because whoever plays him got bored.

Also, main characters from the books will not necessarilly be main characters in the RPs; this is about Mischief Makers, and if you chose to play a random Hufflepuff, you may not be in it too often.

Please, if you cannot be online at least 3 times a week, do not play a main character; it will hold everything up....theres no point in having a role play if the main character cant post. If you cannot post often then take a smaller part.

You may make up your own character (an OC) but as with all characters, it must be realistic. No blonde haired blue eyed loyal, ambitious Gryffindors who can kick a$$ better than Buffy and can defeat Voldemort without breaking a sweat (or a fingernail) These characters are known as 'Mary-Sues' (or in the case of male characters 'Gary Stu's) and will not be accepted. Mary Sue's are also character with no flaws, so please make your character believable. Give them some flaws (and nothing like "oh, she's too sweet") .......

Your character may have special abilities, but please use these sensibly - there's a special ability list, and even ideas on less ordinary character traits and histories HERE However No More Animagi! There are three this year, as dictated by canon; James, Sirius and Peter. No more this year, im afraid. Also No sons/daughters of Voldemort...its been done to death

Go easy on magical 'creatures'...not all of Hogwarts students can be vampires, part-Veela (please spare me these...it crosses into Mary-Sue), Werewolves (However there's only one at Hogwarts right now!!!). Again, i know its limiting, but it can be fun to be a normal witch/wizard too. You may play up to three characters...but only one cannon character. So, you could be Sirius Black and OC's Kate Harris and Tom Winter, but you couldnt take on two/three main Cannon characters because it's not really fair.

Have fun and be original. Give them some quirks and make a joke of it. Having a clumsy character can have interesting results on spells ;)

Applying
Ok, to prevent too many people abandoning their characters...and indeed to help people newer to RPG, our apllication process is:

1. create a character profile. In the Character Applications Forum, start a new thread (include the posticon of characters house, the characters name and the year they are in. ie. Lily Evans, 7th Year)

Name: (character name and nickname if they have one)
Age: (characters age)
Year: (what year are they in at Hogwarts)
House: (What house are they in at Hogwarts)
Other: (prefect? Member of the quidditch team? Any special abilities...please sensible with these.)

Description: (Physical description...must be at least 5 lines, and include: hair colour, eye colour, build, height, any distinguishing featers...ie. scars. Also the kind of clothes they wear. For example, a muggle born would wear clothes fashionable in the 1970's, but a pureblood might only wear wizard robes)

Personality: (Who is your character and what are they like? Must be at least a good sized paragraph. Include things like - are they shy or outgoing, noisey or quiet, do they enjoy attention? are they mischivious, surly, bullies or victims? Was there something in their past that effected them to make them behave as they do? Do they have any hobbies?)

Likes: (What they like...)
Dislikes: (...and what they don't like.)

Family History: (Who is their family, what is the bloodline - wizarding, pureblood, half blood or muggle born...What was their family like, do they still live with them? Did they have a good childhood?)

Social History: (mainly for Main Characters....who are they friends with, and who are they enimies with...is there a histry behind friendships and fueds? - ie MWPP and The Prank in 6th year will be a main source of discomfort for the boys in 7th year)

N.E.W.T subjects: chose 4 main subjects (ie. potions, DADA, Charms, Herbology, Transfiguration, History of Magic, Astronomy) and two other subjects (ie. CoMC, Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Divination, Muggle Studies) for your character to study.

RP Sample: Be descriptive please! We are looking for a good sized post (5 lines minimum), in decent English (use a spellchecker if you're unsure). Include characters actions, thoughts and feelings...describe the scene, the atmosphere...does it bring up any memories for the character? I know it can be difficult, but its very hard to reply to one liner posts, therefore i dont allow them.

2. We'll review your application, and if we think it's good then we'll ask you to join us in a audition thread. The audition thread is nothing to worry about - just a short thread (maybe 3 posts each) with one of the managers so we can see your posting style, and you can get to see the way we work. We'll offer 3 scenarios, you reply to one in a new thread (include character name and scenario number in your post title)...then we reply, and you reply back etc. At the end it's most likely that we'll accept the character :)

Re: Choosing A Character / Applying
Just for your information - if you really really really want an original character, then go for it. However, we do need to fill the canon characters first ... if you send us a good application for one of the open positions (and we have main ones available) you will be very likely to be encouraged into the RP. :D
