Civil War books
Can any of you recommend any good books on the Civil War time period? :? I've been researching the causes of the war and am looking for more to read. Do you have any ideas? :idea I'm looking for something that would be fairly easy to read; nothing terribly dry, if you know what I mean. :) One book that I just read recently and found to be a very good book, is Apostles of Disunion: Southern Secession Commissioners and the Causes of the Civil War, by Charles B. Dew. It wasn't dry at all and very easy reading. :D I'm looking for more, however. I don't want to base my opinion as to which side was more in the right on just one book. I recently saw in VisionForum's catalog something that sounded interesting: Yankees Vs. Rebels here's the link to it: visionforum.com/booksandt...118&refpn=
Has anyone listened to this tape? How was it?

TIA!

Re: Civil War books
My family & I are born-and-bred Southerners & we believe in the cause of the South . . . . . I'm glad to 'hear':) that you're studying it out.
I asked Daddy if he could reccomend (sp?) any books or tapes and he came up with several !
'The South Was Right', by Ronald & Donald Kennedy
'War for What?' ( I don't know the author's name )
'A Defense of Virginia & the South', by Robert Lewis Dabney ( this was written by a Virginian not long after the War )
'The Secret Six', by Otto Scott ( I believe this is about John Brown and the events leading up to the War )
'America:The First 350 Years', tapes by Steve Wilkins
'The Great Civil War Debate', a video of a debate between Steve Wilkins ( for the South ) and Peter Marshall,Jr (for the North ).
We have never heard 'Yankees vs. Rebels' but I believe that it is a very fair treatment of both sides.
In Christ,
Emma

Re: Civil War books
If you are looking for a balanced movie, Gods and Generals is a very good choice.

I have heard the Yankees vs. Rebels tape, and it is also a very balanced presentation. Vision Forum is, in my opinion, an excellent provider of resources for everyone in the family. He makes the excellent point on the tape that the war began because of the sin nature of people on both sides of the conflict.

The South was Right is a good book, in the opinion of a friend who is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a Southern Heritage organization. I haven't yet read it.

I am enjoying Christ in the Camp, an account written in 1887, subtitled The True Story of the Great Revival During the War Between the States, also available from Vision Forum.

Interesting side note to history, during the WBTS, the Confederate Army had the largest number of Evangelical Christians under arms since Cromwell's Army in England.

I find the Civil War fascinating. My daughter is eligible (on her father's side) to be both a Daughter of the American Revolution and an Auxiliary Member to the Sons of Union Veterans. Me, my grandparents and great-grandpareants came over on "the boat" from Sweden, England, and Austro-Hungary, all well after the war. So I am just the "armchair historian" of the family.

Hope these references help. I have a lot of online links, let me know if you'd like me to post them.

God bless you,
Daphne

Re: Civil War books
Thank-you for all the ideas, Ladies! :) I'm so sorry that I hadn't replied sooner. I haven't had much of a chance to do much searching for the books you suggested at our library, but perhaps today when we go. :D I have been going to their Civil War section regularily and will try to find the books you thought of.

We do own Gods & Generals; we just got it in the mail on Saturday! We began watching it Sat. night, but haven't really had a chance to finish it. So far, I've found it to be so neat that so many of these soldier were Christians! However, I think (mind you, I haven't seen the whole movie yet) that I like Gettysburg better. Seeing the rest of the movie just may make me change my mind. ;)

We also just got Yankees vs. Rebels in the mail on Saturday too; Mom ordered from Vision Forum. I was so surprised to see it! Now I can't wait to listen to it!

Thanks again!
