Compliance plates
Hi there,
I'm new to the forums but not to the racing scene, as I'm a member of the NSW Road Racing Club and to some, you may have heard my voice over the PA alongside Joe Zinghini at the State Champ rounds over the last couple of years.
I'm now seriously getting into building a race car and i'm close to obtaining a rolling chassis Toyota Celica that's about to be wrecked. The guy that has it has offered it to me knowing I want to build a car and if I don't then he can strip it.
I'm just wondering if you buy a normal road car that you're going to build up into a complete race car like in Improved Production, do you still need the car's compliance plates attached or because the car is no longer going to be registered and is going to be used solely for racing, they can be taken off?
Hope someone can help me with that question. Many thanks
I imported my car (Honda Civic hatch) from Japan through SSS Automotive and because it was done so with the sole purpose of racing it has no compliance plate.
I think you don't need one if the car is no longer to be registered for road use but that's only my opinion. I can't see why you would need it.

PS. Best of luck with the build and we hope to see you out there in the not-too-distant future.

Re: Compliance plates
Thanks heaps!
See, the guy that's selling the Celica to me said he would remove the plates, so that's quite fine for me!
I hope to be out there sometime soon myself! I was tossing between Combined Touring and Improved Proddies, but Improved Proddies looks quite fun! My main goal - to beat Teigan Butchers and her Datto!

If your keen on a Celica, Don's one is still for sale I believe, and itll be a lot easier than building one from the ground up!

Well actually, I don't mind a challenge. I dont mind working on a car from the ground up and go through the trials and tribulations
The car I'm obtaining is 1993/94 Celica, the model that has the twin headlights and the basis of the last GT-4 Celica before they switched to the Corolla for World Rallying.
Does anyone know if Teigan got her Datto repaired? For those that don't know, Teigan crunched her car into Recaro Corner on Kids Race Day at Oran Park last year and the passenger in that car was me! Have copped plenty since!

you couldn't still go for the bulldogs, could ya ??
Re: Compliance plates
Firstly, is it the compliance plate he wants to remove or the VIN plate/s?
I'm not sure if it is legal to remove the compliance plate, but if he wants to remove the VIN plate, I'd be very concerned as to what is going on here? I'm quite sure it is illegal and I believe CAMS will also require the VIN plates to be in place.

Re: Compliance plates
VIN plates on Toyotas are stamped into the upper firewall. That said, when you import a "For Race Use" car via a NC licence (DOTARS still call it a C3) it commonly has the VIN forcibly removed with an angle grinder. Same as if it was imported "for wrecking"
I'll post a definitive answer tonight when I get home and check but I know for a fact there is no plate on the firewall of my car but there is a plate pop-rivetted on the front crossmember over the radiator.
It could be that when the car leaves Japan that plate is removed. My car also had a sticker on the driver's door jamb (in Japanese) which i think said it was OK to export (it had to be de-registered, etc with Japanese Transport Authority).
I was also concerned about why someone would want to keep a compliance plate given the problems with cut-and-shuts (rebirthing, etc) not that I'm suggetsing your friend is thinking of doing that
As for building a car from scratch I definitely have a few stories to tell - I built my Civic from a road car in just over four months and only now am I returning to "humanity". It is extremely time consuming, sucks your pockets dry and leaves you with sleepless nights. I feel I have achieved what I set out to do but I could have bought a car for cheaper and been quicker on track.

Paitent31,
Be nice or else when you're at OP, be fearful that you might be jinxed

Re: Compliance Plates
Hey Info,
Did you check up on the info in regards to the compliance and VIN plates?
Re: Compliance Plates
On my locally delivered Honda (built in Japan) there is the VIN stamped on the firewall and a compliance plate rivetted to the firewall on the right near the battery. It has a build plate also on the radiator support.
CK,
The racecar (JDM) has the same VIN number stamped on the firewall but no compliance plate. The VIN is however repeated on a small plate rivetted to the radiator support panel. No engine number, build date or the like.
This car was imported by SSS Automotive purely for racing so the Japanese Motorr Transport authorities probably removed the plate when the car was de-registered.
Hope this helps.
Either way, why not ask to keep the compliance plate, just in case.

You don't look a day over 25 Pete...
Have you ever seen the boxing on a Friday night on Foxtel though ?? There's an old bloke that does the pre-fight previews and gets in the ring shadow boxing and explaining how the fight should pan out...
Harmo reckons he's a dead ringer for you and he's spot on, i'll have to tape it one night and give you a look if you don't have Foxtel mate...
Hmmm, can i get any further off track from compliance plates i wonder ??
