Computers v.XX.XXXX
Im in a discussion at the moment about purchasing a new laptop.
Heres the situation. Gibson is still dead, it has bugs and problems Jesus wouldnt touch. It will likely require about 800 of changes to be functional and performing well.
I want a laptop, one that is a mini desktop in power and performance. Currently I am looking at spending $3000 cdn on a very good dell laptop.
The party (dad) with whom I am discussing this is insistant that it will never work right, never play games and is a terrible idea (these are the rational arguments) strangely he is offering an alternative that makes the whole rest of the argument seem less retarded. Take the $3000 and do a desktop Right... Like, LCD, completely new parts.
Im very torn. I really want a laptop, and its likely I can make my current desktop functional eventually....so what do I do?
cash conversion is roughly $2300-2500USD
Re: Computers v.XX.XXXX
Well with a laptop you'd be sacrificing a bit of power and the ability to upgrade for portability and a tech support system.
But for 2500 american you could build a system that no laptop maker could match I think.
Problem with this is i'm assuming you'd be building the desktop rather than buying one and you could run into similar issues as you did with Gibson.
Also, I'd study your LCD monitors carefully before you buy one. I dunno if you read that monitor review Tom's Hardware Guide had recently but just cause a monitor says it has a 8ms response time doesnt mean that's what you'll be getting all or even most of the time.

You pretty much know how I feel about laptops, they're decent backup machines. Problem is, they're just that, a backup machine. They aren't half as comfortable to use as a desktop. They have a smaller screen, weak video card, slow as all fuck hard drive, and a shitty keyboard/mouse built in.
The weight is a major issue that makes carrying them to class a bitch, too. I think you have a good system with your PDA these days.
As far as spending 3k on a new desktop, that's a tad excessive. I perform a pretty heavy overhaul on my box whenever I feel it needs it, and it usually runs me in the 5-800 neighborhood. Spending 3k on a laptop is outrageous, considering it'll be a year to 18 months behind a current desktop in speed and performance.
If you're going to do a laptop, go cheap on that and then buy parts to make Gibson rise from the dead.

A year behind bast? I think that's a bit pessimistic. Aside from processor speed you can outfit these things with DDR2 RAM and a PCI Express video card.

Re: Computers v.XX.XXXX
Granted, it's been a while since I purchased a laptop, but when I was selling them, what was on the shelf was what was in desktops a year to 18 months before. They may have closed the gap on that, but they're still behind.
Re: Computers v.XX.XXXX
Surely your mobo can handle better ram than that. That's almost exactly what im runnin( I think I have DDR 333 tho)
Also, is the video card intentionally on there twice? If so, I take it you're gonna be runnin a SLI setup ?

Re: Computers v.XX.XXXX
The board won't accept SLI, I don't believe. I think I looked into it when I bought the same board, and the SLI version was more.
You can actually get Windows for way less. Most good online hardware vendors will sell you a full copy of it for like $100 if you buy a piece of hardware.
Re: Computers v.XX.XXXX
The only reason I got a laptop over the desktop... well ok I was in another country at the time and a desktop just wasn't practical....
I still probably would have chosen the laptop over desktop. In class, I won't take notes. I just sit there and listen, I hate writing stuff down on paper. So instead my laptop will accompany me to class. (and boo hoo on carrying it around bast. I've had heavier textbooks to lug around).
It also performs well as a desktop replacement. I realize that I could have built a comparable desktop for half what I paid for the laptop... but I wanted the portability.
I've got a Mobility Radeon 9700 in here, and it gets me on average 40-70fps in CS.
