Controversy in Salt Lake City
'We Have Sinned Against You'

A leading evangelical speaks at the Mormon Tabernacle and says evangelicals have spread lies about LDS beliefs.

Quote:
For the first time in 105 years, non-Mormons mounted the pulpit at the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City on Nov. 14. The event, dubbed an "Evening of Friendship," was organized by Standing Together, a network of 100 evangelical churches trying to improve relations with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Historical animosity dating back to the founding of the LDS Church has heightened in recent years between the two groups, particularly in the 1990s, when high-profile evangelical leaders said that Mormons are not Christians and the Southern Baptist Convention held one of its annual meetings in Salt Lake City, partially with the goal of converting Mormons to evangelical Protestantism.

Controversy surrounds Mormonism comments by Fuller exec.

Quote:
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP)--Evangelical Christian leaders and experts on Mormonism have expressed dismay at recent comments made by Fuller Theological Seminary President Richard Mouw at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' "signature pulpit" in Salt Lake City.

Mouw spoke briefly Nov. 14 during the second night of a three-part series titled "Evening of Friendship," which was sponsored by Standing Together Ministries, an evangelical Christian group headquartered in Lehi, Utah. The main speaker for the nightly lecture series was noted Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias.

According to articles published in the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune as well as transcript of the speech provided by Mouw, he apologized at the event for evangelical Christians' misrepresentation of the Mormon beliefs.

Re: Controversy in Salt Lake City
I'm confused ... do the Mormons then not beleive in apotheotic divinity for example? Or that the Amerindian peoples are a subhuman offshoot of one of the lost tribes of Israel that exterminated the righteous part of the tribe?

I'm not at all sure I can see the basis on which Mr Mouw repents the idea of Mormonism not being a Christian sect - it certainly seems to be a strange idea to come from an evangelical minister. 0]
