Counted Cross Stitch
:sun Hi Ladies!

I absolutely love :love all types of hand work. I don't know if your like me but I have a little group of projects to work on. I was curious if any of you do counted cross stitch? I'm working on my first -big- project. :multi It's a Paula Vaughn picture called, "A Bride's Prayer." You can visit Mrs. Vaughn's site by clicking here. I'm far from being complete, but it is so much fun! If you'd like to see a picture of the project I'm working on please click here!

I'd love to see your projects, or the one's you've completed!

:nice

Blessings!

Oh Emilee! It's beautiful!:clap
I also cross-stich. I enjoy it very much! It's hard work and takes a fairly good amount of time, but isn't it worth it when it's done!:multi
I like to make samplers. Or little sayings with embelished flowers or hearts around it!

The cross-stitch you are working on is beautiful! I haven't done any cross-stitching lately, but I do really enjoy it. They are so pretty.

Your project is soo pretty!:D
I cross stitched a floral pattern onto a hand towel for my sister last Christmas. It does take a long time! I would love to do something bigger, if I can find the time!

Re: Counted Cross Stitch
I too enjoy doing cross stitch. A few years ago my Dad and Mum visited our family in Holland and they returned with a large counted cross stitch project for me to do of the Dutch wild flowers! It took me two winters to complete! But now it is hanging in my bedroom!

Do any of you ladies also do embroidery? My Aunty gave me a large tablecloth to embroider (that also took me 2 years to complete) with colourful flowers on it. It gives a lot of satisfaction to see projects finished so that you can share their beauty with others!

Enjoy those long winter evenings!

Fanny.

Here is a link to a picture of one of my favorite "spare time projects." I do these in the car and enjoy them a lot. I scanned these towels and the colors do not show up very well at all, but it gives the general idea.

I have never done any cross stitching. I will though! :) My mom and I are going to go through The Jpy of Womanhood study by Keepers of the Faith. I believe cross stiching is one of the requirments. :D I am looking forward to it.

Beautiful!
Ruth,

Your towels are absolutely beautiful! Thank you for posting the links to your pictures!! Could you tell me where you purchase your towels to cross stitch on? Locally, we only have white ones, I believe. I really like your colors! I look forward to hearing from you!

Blessings!

Re: Beautiful!
Ruth,
Your towels are lovely! Please do please tell us where you purchase your towels!:shop

I was also wondering, where did you get the patterns for the cross-stitch designs? I would really like to try them out!:love

Emilee, I love that cross-stitch picture you’re working on! I like Paula Vaughn's paintings, and would like to do one of her cross-stitch pictures—if I only had enough patience! Projects that take awhile don’t sit well with me! Oh, well, I’ll just stick to the quicker ones!

Re: Beautiful!
I get the towels from JoAnne Fabrics, Hancock Fabricks, Wal-Mart, and sometimes even a dollar store will have them (usually they have a flaw, but then they are only $1 and usually the "problem" is that they are wider, which I think is just great!). I think that Hancock Fabrics is the place where I've found the most colors.

I made up the patterns that I use, but I used a book for the basis of them. Basically, I combined several ideas and made up my own patterns and colors. I am going to list the book from memory, so I hope that it will be correct:

Learn to Design Book #4 by Dale Burdett or Burkett ? (I'm not sure how the name is spelled, or even what it is :) - if I get a chance I will look it up later). These are cross-stitch designs and many of them look like lace. They are beautiful - exactly the kind of thing I like to do with cross-stitch. They aren't specifically for towels, but I think that they work extremely well. I am making several sets in different colors for my hopechest and my sisters and for several friends.

I have drawn out my pattern for my own use and eventually I hope to redo it so that others can read it. :) If I ever get that done, I will post it. :)

Re: Beautiful!
Ruth,

Thank you!! I’ll have to check around some more. Our Jo-Ann’s store only has white and the only nice thick ones are finger towels.:cat

And I was wondering…unless you think you’ll be posting your designs soon, would it be okay if I charted out the designs for myself? I’m pretty sure I could figure it out from your pictures. If you prefer not, though, it’s fine.:D

Also, do you know how the finished towels hold up through washing? I’m just wondering how it affects the cross-stitching.:rolleyes

Re: Wow!
I'm sorry to respond to this so late! We have had company and I'm slowly trying to catch up on several things that I've neglected. I've missed everyone here at Reminisce. :)

I don't think I've ever washed one of my embroidered hand towels before. However, the towels come with washing instructions which I have typed out:

"Washing Instructions:

After stitching, hand wash in cold water with mild liquid soap. No Bleach. Rinse thoroughly in cold water. Roll in towel to absorb excess moisture. Do not twist or wring. Place face down on clean towel andiron until completely dry."

Some embroidery flosses bleed, so you might want to wash the embroidery floss before using it.

I have only embroidered hand towels, so they are what the patterns that I've made are for. However, I was given some larger towels a while back that I would like to embroider eventually. We use hand towels at our house mostly for decoration, so we haven't really needed to wash them. :)

Hannah, you could certainly chart them yourself! Also, I think the same patterns would work on larger towels without too much adjustment.

Ruth,

Thank you for the information!:D And for letting me use your designs! The towels would be nice to use when company comes!!:multi

I understand about having company! It's fun, but throws everything off schedule for a while!:rollin
