Cut of our jibs
From Peter Torney - SWans WAy. -In the light of discussion of new genoas and weather helm the following may be of some minor passing interest. I was in Howth marina a few weeks ago when a strong wind warning was broadcast. I removed my genoa and put my No 2 Jib on the roller sustem. (I bought this shortly after getting Swans Way for any heavy weather etc rather than rolling the genoa). The next day winds were 28-35 knots apparent and with two reefs in the main and the No2 I was amazed at how balacnced the boat was; very little weather helm. I left the sail up for the next day and with winds of 18-24 kts apparant and sailing a little free of a beat I was again surprised how balanced the boat had become - with no reefs in the main I could steer the boat with my litle finger so well balanced had she become! My impressions: I wonder whether these vessels were designed for roller genoas. Yes thay can be rolled in to reef but (at least with mine) the foot seems too low and the leach creeps down the forestay at great rate as the sail is reefed - it feels awkward and looks 'not right'. Anyway I'm thinking of getting a working/No1 jib instead of a genoa using the Nicholson drawings as a start. My No 2 by the way has a larger leach and luff thatn the recommended No2 but the same foot. Comments would be welcome.
