Diaries of Confederate Ladies~Help
Since reading Katherine Jones' book 'Heroines of Dixie', which is a collection of extracts from the diaries, letters and memoirs of various Southern ladies, I have been very interested in finding more of these diaries and memoirs. However, Miss Jones' book was published fifty years ago and most of these are, I believe, now very rare out-of-print books. The only ones I can find are those of Sarah Morgan ( a Lousiana young lady ) and, of course, Mary Chestnut.
Do any of y'all know of sources for these diaries or if they are still in print ? There are several in particular I am looking for . . . do y'all know of any other good ones ?

The diary of Miss Susan Bradford ( her married name was Eppes ), which was published by her in 1926 under the title of 'Through Some Eventful Years'.

The memoir of Varina Howell Davis, wife of Jefferson Davis: 'Jefferson Davis: A Memoir by His Wife'.Published in 1890.

Diary of Mrs Judith Brockenbrough McGuire, originally published in 1867 as 'Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War, by a Lady of Virginia'

Diary/memoir of Mrs Cornelia Peake McDonald, published in 1934 by her son Hunter McDonald as 'A Diary With Reminscences of Refugee Life in the Shenandoah Valley'

Diary of Miss Kate Cumming, a nurse, published in 1866 as 'A Journal of Hospital Life in the Confederate Army of Tennesee'

Memoir of Mrs Roger A ( Sara Rice ) Pryor, published in 1904: 'Reminiscences of Peace and War'

Memoir of Miss Mary Ann Harris Gay ( 1897 ) : 'Life in Dixie during the War'

Memoir of Mrs Phoebe Yates Pember, a nurse ( 1879 ) :'A Southern Woman's Story '

Diary of Miss Eliza Frances Williams ( 1908 ) : 'The War-time Journal of a Georgia Girl'

I would greatly appreciate help in finding any of these books, thank you ladies. The titles and publication dates are from the bibliography of 'Heroines of Dixie'; the books may have been reprinted under different titles.
In Christ,
Emma

I have read Heroines of Dixie also! I started looking for all of those books as well. Some of them were actually at a local library, so that was nice.

I know where to find the third one you listed. Diary of a Southern Refugee During the War by Judith B. McGuire
www.graceandtruthbooks.co....asp?ID=57

I have another suggestion of Growing up in the 1850's: The Journal of Agnes Lee - this was a very interesting book. You can find a copy pretty inexpensively through bookfinder.com I would actually search for all of these books at that address.

Dear Emma,

When I read your post I was so excited becuase I realized that my Mom had picked up that book at an antique mall a few months ago and I had forgotten about them. However my Heroines of Dixie is tow volumes--Winter of Desperation and Spring of High Hope. Do you have both or is yours combined? Then I went straight to our own personal library (we have tons of books) and I found one that you had named--"A Southern Woman's Story: Life in Confederate Richmond" on Phoebe Yates Pember it is aMockingbird Book originally printed in 1959 but this is a 1980 edition. I would like to thank you for bringing this to my memory because I started to read it since I was in between books--it is fabulous, when I am done maybe I'll read Heroines of Dixie. This story that Mrs. Pember gives has plenty of stories from soldiers and perhaps I will get story ideas from it. :)

Thank you, I am sorry I cannot help you find these books I will be on the lookout for them however also keep a lookout at bookshops (old ones) and antique malls.

I actually purchased the book, "Growing Up in the 1850s The Journal of Agnes Lee" at Stratford Hall in VA. (Robert E. Lee's Birthplace) It was great to hear that you enjoyed reading this book, Ruth! I have to take time to read it; it's on my "To Read List", :)

I picked up a book on the diaries of women and girls traveling the Oregon Trail, in Colorado, this past May. I have so enjoyed what I've read!! It's an 11 book series. There is a book that features diaries written during the Civil War.

I really enjoy reading the diaries of people who actually experienced various events in history. It is a more personal approach to history! :)

Emma, you might try AddALL.com for a book search. I just found this site recently and it seems to work fairly well. It searches 15 used book websites. I believe there is also a search for finding new books too. I love to use bookfinder.com! It's not included in AddALL's search. So, you'll want to check there too. Here's the link for AddALL:used.addall.com/

Let me know if there are any other diaries you'd recommend! I'd love to hear about them.

Have fun researching!

Thank you so much. Maybe I'll ask Daddy to look at the websites y'all suggested.I didn't think of looking at the library:rolleyes . . . . .I'll try that next time we go.I know our library system has a lot of old books.I did see one diary there (Miss Emma Holmes).
Ruth & Emilee . . . I didn't know Agnes Lee's journal was in print.I will definitely be on the lookout for that one.
Stephanie . . . .My 'Heroines of Dixie' is one volume.I got it at a discount bookstore in Vicksburg,Mississippi. However, I used to have 'Spring of High Hopes'.We do go to a lot of antique stores.Another place to look is gift shops at historical sites or museums.
Thanks for the help, ladies.
In Christ,
Emma
