Dilema
I have a question here, folks. I have a Prestolite dual point distributor, an Accel dual point (no vacuum advance), and a factory electronic distrubutor. Which would be best for my 70 roadrunner driver? Any opinions?
I have had best luck with the factory electronic with an orange box. Just have the distributor recurved by a good shop and away you go. If you need to purchase a kit, get a remanufactured distributor from any parts store and then get the harness, ballast and box from Mopar. It will be cheaper and the older rebuilt distributor is by far better then the distributors that Mopar offers now.
Re: Dilemma
I'd go with the electronic on a driver...that is of course, you actually enjoy hours and hours of quality time with a dwell meter and timing light!
As much of a nut as I am about originality, I use the Chrysler electronic ignition stuff on my hemi Roadrunner, since I drive it fairly regularly during the summer. Of course, I didn't drill any holes to mount anything or mess anything else up, and it's hidden pretty well! The difference in starting it alone is worth it.
And if I ever take this car to a "serious" show, which I doubt I will since I have two other cars that are "correct" that I show, I've got all the original stuff, and could put it back in a flash.
I only wish someone made a "tan" distributor cap for the electronic distributor!

Re: Dilemma
In reference to my previous post.....I do have one small confession to make. I didn't actually go out and "buy" the Chrysler electronic distributor and orange box to put on my Roadrunner. It just happened to have been previously installed by another owner on my Superbird when I bought it years ago. So when I bought the correct distributor for the Superbird during it's restoration, the electronic stuff was just lying around. If I hadn't gotten it for "free", I'd probably be out in the garage right now...with my dwell meter and timing light.....cussing....

Re: Dilemma
yea, i put the electronic conversion on my roadrunner....
the difference was night and day!!!!! i set the initial at 10 degrees, maybe 11....and it screamed!!!
the hemi will get a msd box to help out but when i put everything back to stock, i'll keep the electronic ignition!!!
Re: Dilemma
Thanks, fellas. I just ordered a MP kit from the local Dodge dealership for $169.10. I'll be installing it tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.
BTW, JohnGalt48, every time I get a new cap from the local parts store, they give me a "tan" cap for the electronic ignition. I'm not sure where you've looked, but try NAPA. I believe it is their Echlin cap.
Re: Dilemma
Thanks for the info, offroadrunner. I try to avoid NAPA whenever possible, but for a tan cap....I just might make an exception! That black cap on my Roadrunner is embarrassing!

Re: Dilemma
I use the the MP Chrome Box w/ my EEEElectronic Distributor. I heard you dont want to subject them to too much heat.
I installed mine under the battery tray and wrapped the wires with the existing Battery Cable stuff. Can't see it, starts all the time, no hassles.
