Division 1 Signings Please post any signings this spring or summer here with as many details as possible. Anyone hear what Lindsey Wilson, Georgetown, or Mountain State have drug out to play for them next year. They all three had big holes to fill. What about the new coach at Lee, OCU and what has Mike Helfer been able to do since he was shopping around for a job. Did it hurt his recruiting? |

Wayland PLAINVIEW – The Wayland Baptist University Pioneers have signed their only recruit of the off-season. Lee Berend has agreed to play for the Pioneers next season. Berend, the son of Mike and Cindy Berend of Graham, led his team to the Class 3A state title game last season, averaging 34 points per game in the regional and state tournaments. As a senior at Graham High School, Berend averaged 25 points and 14 rebounds per game. Pioneer coach Todd Thurman said former Wayland All-American Ty Harrelson saw Berend play and recommended him to Thurman. Thurman had a chance to watch Berend at the regional and state tournaments and liked what he saw. WBU assistant coach Donnie Dean said Berend will be a good fit in the Pioneer system. “When he gets a little stronger and little quicker, he has a chance to be a very good player for us,” Dean said. The Pioneers have all their starters returning from a team that went 16-13 last season. |

Re: Wayland recruit Berend - 6'4", 185... has room to add weight; played post in high school, so probably a 4; could be much like current Pioneers Storey and Bridges. WBU also gets Ocheskey back from injury. He never made the floor last season due to an injury. He was tabbed as the first real post player Wayland has had in a long time. |
