Elsie Dinsmore
I just wanted to reccomend the Elsie Dinsmore & Millie Keith series. I have the A Life of Faith version of Elsie, and my sister has Millie. I read them all of the time! Hope this helps!
Below is the link for their website.

Note from Titus 2 Ministry...I just edited this post to correct the link. :)

Re: Elsie Dinsmore
Dearest Sister,
It makes me very sad to write this, but I can not recommend the new versions of the Elsie books, Life of Faith.
If you read on their website concerning the changes that have been made, it will just break your heart.:sad
I have read 17 of the 28 original Elsie books. They are so near and dear to my heart.
I tend to become upset when publishers take perfectly WONDERFUL books and "Update" them! AHHHH.
Your Sister in Christ,
Avery

I love the Elsie Dinsmore Series too. I have never read the Life of Faith version. I think they modernized it. I have the orignal series which I believe you can get Vision Forum. www.visionforum.com . So now you girls have two choices. :)

Re: Elsie Dinsmore
I have a question to ask you girls. I have read the Elsie Dinsmore(old version) series and just couldn't get into them. I can't understand how you girls can like them when all they are about is how good Elsie is, and how Elsie never does any wrong. They seemed, well, sacriligiuos to me because she was so perfect and the Bible says "There is none righteous, no not one." So, I guess that's what I wanted to say.

Good point, Corri. Mommy & I read the first twelve Elsie books ( original series ) and we have had several problems with them ;we finally sold them on ebay.I have also heard it said that Elsie is feminist--because she didn't change her name when she married & always seemed to be the spiritual head of the family, etc. . . which seems like a valid point to us.:?

I find it interesting, Corri, that you picked up on that perfectionism (for lack of a better word). I have actually never read those books, but have heard nothing but good about them. I do think that it is really important for us to recognize and point out these types of things, even (or perhaps especially) if we are going to recommend the book to someone else. We need to be on guard, because all good books (except THE Good Book) probably have their faults.
So even if a book is worth reading, we shouldn't think so highly of it that we are unwilling to recognize any imperfections.
Has anyone ever read Little Lord Fauntleroy? (I may have the spelling wrong). The little boy in this book is a similar example of what you were talking about. The author makes him out to be an absolutely perfect, adorable child who never did anything wrong. His grandfather eventually turns into a very nice old man because of him (as best as I can remember). The worst part, though (which I know is not like the Elsie books), is that this is pretty much a secular book. That is, there is a lot of examples of outward goodness, but no credit or glory is given to God. The author pretty much left out the most important aspect of true goodness. It may seem like an innocent enough book, but I do hate this kind of godlessness! Morality is nothing without God!

Re: Elsie Dinsmore
interesting, I have also heard that the Elsie books we're, well, sort of annoying, because of how perfect Elsie is. I myself havn't read any of the books, but my mother tried, and she said they were "hard to swallow" but I do love those type of books, like The Pansy series, and Stepping Heavenward etc.
So that's why I was so confused about the Elsie books.:\
Just a note!

Re: Elsie Dinsmore
OK, OK, maybe I am missing something.

I generally love books written in the 1800s and have no problem with the language. Because I like books to be true to their author, when I read the message written about the changes made to the Elsie Dinsmore books, I went to the web site and looked through it pretty thoroughly, especially the pages dedicated to parents and grandparents.

For the life of my, I couldn't find anything objectionable there. Could someone please tell me why they believe the changes made are wrong?

Thanks so much,
daphne
