FIU to the Big East
I've been pondering all the moves that have been going on at FIU recently, and i'm convinced that FIU is making a push to join the Big East Conference, and the Sunbelt knows it.
Here's what i can tell. right now, FIU is struggling in Football and Basketball. However, as we've seen with football (and soon, basketball), a failure to perform will get you fired. I think newly hired athletic director Pete Garcia os giving everyone a 1-year trial. perform or be fired.
Now, as we know, in the current NCAA Football landscape, the only way to be competitive is the be a 12-team conference, ala ACC, SEC, Big 12, etc. Right now, the Big East is only at 8 football teams, thus, they need to expand by 4 additional schools. FIU would fit into this conference perfectly. the Big East used to have a presence here in Miami, with University of Miami playing the big games. However, those games gave the Big East schools a lot of exposure to the South Florida market (even if they were getting blown out). Now, if they could return to this area, albeit to a smaller venue, they could use the opportunity to recruit here, and have their product displayed.
Basketball in the Big East stands at 16 teams, but i would imagine that they are willing to expand even further in consolation to football, in order to remain competitive.
Its purely a great business move for the Big East and FIU is in the right place at the right time.
