George MacDonald I love all books by George MacDonald. Most of you probably know who he is, but for those who don't... C.S. Lewis has said many times that George MacDonald was his favorite writer. He even said he quoted George MacDonald in every book he wrote. He lived in Scotland and his books are set in Scotland and have some Scottish dialogue (they have been edited out of the original language because the original dialect is so thick). They are all set in gorgeous settings and tend to have some sort of romance. But what I love about them is that in every one I have read so far has at least one person - main character - come to the Lord. You get to work through that process with these characters in this beautiful romantic setting. The Lord has truly blessed him with incredible wisdom. I hope you enjoy George MacDonald books as much as I do. Kim |

Re: George MacDonald Oh, I just love George MacDonald's books. I started reading them at a pretty young age, but enjoyed them so much! My Dad has a whole bunch of his adult novels and let me read a couple of the more easy-reading ones. I have read all the ones we own, including: The Baronet's Song, The Shepherd's Castle, The Fisherman's Lady, The Marquis' Secret, The Curate's Awakening, and more! I love the dialect (sometimes my sister and I will use words and phrases, such as: "I dinna ken"--I don't know, bairn--baby, etc...LIC, Kristalily
"Shout to the Lord, All the earth let us sing Power and Majesty, praise to the King! Mountains bow down and the seas will roar at the sound of your name. I sing for joy at the work of your hands, forever I'll love you, forever I'll stand. Nothing compares to the promise I have in You."

Re: George MacDonald Oh Krista . . . you're not the only one who uses Scotch phrases ! My family is really interested in our Celtic heritage, so we read a lot of books about/set in Scotland~and we go around speaking Scots all the time ! As for George Macdonald . . . our former neighbours ( another conservative homeschool family with seven children ) were also interested in Scottish heritage. They lent me 'Sir Gibbie' ( 'The Baronet's Song" ) and 'Donal Grant' ( 'The Shepherd's Castle' ),which are pretty good.My little sister Ellen ( age 11 ) loved 'Sir Gibbie'. Re: George MacDonald I too love George MacDonald but I haven't read much by him. I have read Sir GIbbie it is such a sad but sweet story--I am thinking of reading that aloud to my little siblings. Also I don't know how many of you have read the Light Princess, but I love fairy tales and I love that book in particular. I have my own little hard back copy of it with all the beautiful pictures such a sweet story. I'll have to read his other books, I just haven't gotten around to it. I have thought about throwing a Scottish type tea party with the Lorna Doone type theme, maybe I'll bring in George MacDonald and his writings as well. ~Stephanie |
