Gettin started with Dogs
I've had my fair share of harvests with hogs, whether sitting on a stand or trapping, and I have particiapated in a few hunts with dogs. Now I'm ready to get my own dogs. What breeds and how many do you suggest that I start with? I was think of starting with 2 to 3 bay dogs, and one good catch dog, but would prefer a bay dog that could catch. The guys that I hunt with use catahoulas for bays, but for some reason, I don't take a liking to the breed. Please post suggestions and what you might have started with. Also, if you or someone you knows sells well trained dogs for a decent price, please reply by post or email at Rednckdrummer@aol.com.
You can BMC, hounds, pound pups, whatever works for you. We run Catahoulas, Blue lacy`s and BMC they get the job done for us, but everyone has their choice of wht they run. You might try some pit crosses for bay and catch. Good luck.
Re: Gettin started with Dogs
Jesse James gave a good idea and some good dog breeds to use. I prefer a yellow black mouth cur or its cross for baydogs. Cur x pits for stop/bay/catchdogs, and two catchdogs. My catchdogs are either pits, AB's or DOGOS.
My prefered pack is one or two gritty baydogs, one or two stop dogs, and ALWAYS NO LESS THEN TWO catchdogs. Running one catchdog at a time can lead to alot of dead catchdogs, or your catchdog being cut down all the time. Even vested. For me it is not an option to run less then two catchdogs.
