Getting "buy-in" to the Hope Chest concept from my Howdy, everyone, I have a lovely, sweet-tempered, but VERY intellectual daughter of 18 years age. Because I have had to work more than full-time to support us, I have been grateful that she has been so little trouble, a good Christian kid, a good student, etc. etc. Somehow in the middle of our journey, I ran out of time to train her properly to manage her own home (which I sorely regret). She is focused on college and career for the most part, although she claims she wants to marry and have a family. I know people change, I did, when I was in college I wasn't anything even resembling a Christian. So I know she is further ahead than I was at that age. I have tried for the last few years to get her interested in the idea of having a home via the Hope Chest concept...she resisted it until last week, when voila! the Lord provided the means to motivate her. I was in Estate Sale Cellar, which sells the leftovers from Estate Sales. They had a lovely set of stemmed glassware, the colored kind people usually display in a china cabinet. Celeste and I have admired these glasses before, but could not afford the high prices in most stores. These glasses were only $10 a stem! I suggeted to Celeste that I purchase a set of 4 "for her Hope Chest", which she smiled and agreed to. Later we were talking about the Hope Chest itself, and she expressed concern about finances in purchasing one. The idea came to me suddenly, her old toy chest was sitting in the garage, full of old toys from her younger years. I mentioned it to her, and she said that, when she comes home from Baylor at Christmas, she would clean out the old toys, giving away or selling the ones she didn't want to keep as mementoes. Then we could clean it up, repaint and stencil it, and have a Hope Chest at small cost. So....ta da! finally, we have Hope Chest lift-off! smiles, daphne

Re: Getting "buy-in" to the Hope Chest concept fro Daphne, That's wonderful news about your daughter! The process of collecting items for her hope chest will be a wonderful mother-daughter time for the both of you! My Mom and I have had such fun making things and collecting items for my hope chest. Even my extended family has helped add to my collection. Like Atlanta said, don't forget about Christmas time, or even birthdays for that matter! Last year, for my birthday, my Grandma gave me a set of towels for my hope chest. I was thrilled. Have fun, as you two spend some quality time together making your daughter's hope chest and collecting treasures to put within it! May the Lord bless you two richly! Emilee Elizabeth

Re: Getting "buy-in" to the Hope Chest concept fro Thank you for your kind comments, and your advice on how to proceed now. Homeschooling Today has had handsewing articles lately by Jennie Chancey, I am thinking of using the first one with Celeste over Christmas (she can machine sew, but not hand sew) to make some napkins for her Hope Chest. God bless you all, daphne
