Re: Goats
Hi Danielle,

I have milking goats. I just love them. We got our first goats about 7 years ago, we bought kids that were only a few days old. That was a big mistake. Kids need to have their mother's milk for at least 3 weeks, it has antibodies in it that will help the kid to live. We lost two of the first kids because of bad information about taking them from the mother too soon and what type of milk to give them. We had to nurse the remaining one 24 hours a day for about a week to get her through it and although she was a wonderful and sweet animal, she had difficulties for her whole life, we lost her in November of 2001.

The best advice that I can give you is to get a few books to help you learn about goats. I would recommend the following books:

"The New Goat Handbook" by Ulrich Jaudas Published by Barrons

"Raising Milk Goats Successfully" by Gale Luttmann Published by Williamson Publishing

Each book is about $10.00 and they are very good for learning about goat care, and what breeds of goats and etc...

If you have specific questions I will be glad to try and answer them. I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but I would love to be of help to you if I can.

Take care,

Shari

Re: Goats
Hello!
Others here know a lot more about goats than I do, but I'll add my two cents. :)
Our goats are African Pigmies. The are about half the size of a regular goat, have nice fluffy, pretty coats, generally have a pretty spicy attitude. :) My goat in particular has a VERY spicy attitude. She loves to use her horns in bordom, play, or anger. That was partly our fault, because when she was a baby my dad and brother thought it was so fun to hold out their fists and watch my goat rare up and head-butt it. :) So I think we encouraged her to use her horns, and now she has taught her baby quite well also, though he is much more mild-mannered.

Re: Goats
Well, I think spanish goats are kinda skittish, so I wouldn't try those, and though I like Nubian, I wouldn't totally recommend them either, because they enjoy getting out of pens and into anything they see. I'm telling you, if a goat can get their head through, they will try their utmost to get their body thru.

I think boar (bhore, ? sp?) goats are good, thouugh i've never raised them.;)

Re: Goats
Kim,what is wrong with nubians? We have a friend who used
to keep a herd of registered nubians (she sold them because she couldn't keep goats at all anymore). She gave us two does
(a mother & daughter) and we never had any problems with
them (my mother doesn't like goats,so we don't keep any).Just
wondering!

Re: Goats
hi there! I LOVE goats!! I'm not exactly sure why one of the girls suggested not getting Nubian goats. They are actually my favorite. It may be more a matter of oppinion of likes and dislikes than anything. :)
I had Nubian goats for quite some time, then I had to sell them for various reasons. However, within several weeks I will be getting some babies from the Nubians I sold! I am also planning on getting a grown milker. I'm not exactly sure if that will be an Alpine or Nubian. I like either one. But especially Nubian. Alpine's I think tend to milk a bit more, however, I have seen the Nubian's have richer milk.
One mistake that we made while having goats is not worming them often enough. Make sure you worm your goats!! They really will get to looking unhealthy and poorly. make sure they get outside and are able to eat the grass. Your milk may taste a bit stronger than if you were to just let them eat hay, but.... YOu'll sure have happy goats!! Give the goats carrot peels, and apple cores too! :-D In the summer, as grain, give them plain oats. in winter, I mixed my oats with some sweet feed. Keeps them warm. Don't give too much though or it will effect the taste of the milk.
I am looking forward to reading more comments on goats!! I am SO excited about getting mine soon too!! :-D
Love you all!

Re: Goats
Dear Ladies,

How surprised I was to read about goats here! Just like some of the other ladies I do not understand what is so wrong with Nubians! I have 5 Nubians and they do not give me any trouble at all! At the moment I am milking one of them and I have 2 pregnant just this week and are due in 5 months time. The other two are only a year old.

There are many misnomers about goats, one of them being that they will eat anything and everything. I have not found this to be the case with my goats. If they have plenty to eat on the paddocks they will not venture any further. Goats are not real big grass eaters, but rather they are browsers and enjoy eating bark, leaves, twigs etc. which is very good for their digestive system and keeps them healthy. My goats love Hawthorn and blackberry of which we have plenty!

Another lady wrote about ensuring they are wormed. Well, I have had my goats for 3 years and they have never been wormed with chemical drenches! Ensure they have access to hay/silage morning and evening. The morning is very important because the grass is damp and worms move to the top of the grass blade which the goats can then eat. If the goat has access to hay they won't eat the grass till it has dried from the suns rays. This is not only applicable to goats, but also other farm animals. The second lesson I learnt was do not run goats and sheep together as they carry the same type of worms and therefore it can cross infect. Cattle is a better alternative, we keep 3 steers, as they have diffferent worms. Thirdly, I drench my goats weekly with a mix of fresh pressed garlic mixed in with grape juice which they love! In the winter I drench them every second day - as worms may be more prevalent in this time! The drench is just given orally in a plastic syringe.

Sanens (the more common white coloured goat) are mostly used for their milk production as they produce the highest quantity of milk. The Nubians however have milk that containes a higher level of butter fat which is excellent for making cheese and yoghurt, which I also do. The Boer goats, as far as I am aware are used mainly for meat and I have never read that they are used for dairy.

I do give my goats a small handfull or two of dry feed - 2 parts lucern chaff, one part crushed barley, one part crushed oats, twice a day at milking time. Lastly, my goats love molases in warm water every morning!

I hope this info has been a help to you and I hope all you ladies have fun with your goats as I do with mine. They make life very interesting!

That's all from me for now!

God bless,
Fanny.

Re: Goats From Margret
Dear Danielle,
As with a few of the other girls I don't see what is wrong with Nubians. All the nubians I have ever known were sweethearts. But I guess it is just a matter of what you pefer. A really good book to read is The Goatkeeper's Veterinary Book by Peter Dunn . Another good book is Raising Milk Goats Successfully by Gail Luttmann. If this is your first goat start small with something like a nigerian drawf (sp?), or a pygmy. If you get large goats such as the Alpine, Nubian, or a Boer get them dehorned . And at the same time if you get a buck (boy) get him descented. For a natural dewormer use walnut leaves. Also they love to eat poison ivy. If you would like so more information like websites or anything just let me know.

Margret
