Re: Helpctr
Hi teenfounder,

Quite annoying problem you seem to have there. I believe that the HELPCTR.EXE has been known to have some registry probems, so you could try clicking start, run and type HELPCTR -REGSERVER. This will re-register the the application in the registry.

Please let us know how you get on.

Kind regards,

Re: Helpctr
I tried this fix, and it worked at first. I also have the exact same problem as teenfounder.

It seemed to work for awhile, but now the problem returns every time I boot up. Is there something more permanent I can do like erase the program altogether?

I never use help anyhow. Can I get rid of this safely?

Any comments appreciated.

Re: Helpctr
The best thing to do is rename the file to HELPCTR.OLD that way if it does cause any problems you can just revert it back to it's original name.

Am I getting you right?

When I rename the file, it will not automatically open when I start.

I am assuming this because I have never heard of .old files.

Could I do the same with "direct CD?"

I'd sure like to clean out that systray.

Re: helpctr
The best way to clear out your systray is to work out which programs you have in there after startup and go into each bit of software in turn and deactivate the launch program at startup options.

Re: Helpctr
i had this same problem about a week ago... thing is helpctr.exe is listed in 3 places on the hd. The one located in the binaries folder will replicate itself if you try to move, rename or delete it!

The way i resolved it was to install XP. :( Knock on wood it doesn't come back again...

Windows XP
I thought about that solution. I think I will wait until I have a computer worth putting that program on.

Until then I must suffer the annoying ME junk. O think I will uninstall ME. I noticed no real changes when I upgraded other than the crappy Helpctr bug.

THIS DAMN HELPCTR.EXE
Please help me.

I have the same problem as the original guy in this thread. Your computer can bootup and if you leave it running for days with ME on it, then eventually you'll come back to your machine and there will be 100 spawned HELPCTR.EXE's on it. And you need to kill them all through the close program window (ctrl+alt+del).

I tried to execute the registry fix that was mentioned in this thread, it executed fine but DOES NOT solve the problem.

Does anyone know why half the world is experiencing the HELPCTR.EXE problem and noone can seem to fix it?

Can we rename the damn file? It appears not, from the above.

If not, is there anything else I can do before I force myself to upgrade to Win2K???

Thanks alot.

Raven.

AARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGHHHHHHHHH
I've tried already lots of answers to this matter, but nothing seems to work. Isn't there anyone who can help me (us) out of this frustrating thing? Also, does anyone know if there's a connection between the helpctr and my pc trying to get online? Always when I get back and I'm seeing the helpctr, my dial up screen is showing as well and I can't find another reason for it.

My PC is plagued with "helpctr.exe virus", if it is called such.
Symptoms:
- When I try to use any software program, the respective help program would load on its own again and again. For example, as soon as I click on the address bar in IE, the IE help would pop open, close it, type a few letters, pops again. Same with any other program I try to use, e.g. Task Manager, WinZip, Ad-aware, Norton, etc. anything I get my hands on.
- Numerous helpctr.exe and suspicious helpHost.exe, helpSvc.exe processes taking up 100% of CPU.

- Error message showing over and over again, saying something like, "helpctr.exe - Cannot initialize application(0x0000142)
I scanned my PC with Spybot, Ad-aware(corrected a few registries) and Norton(no virus found) - did not solve the problem. I also installed the Microsoft security update . I even reinstalled Windows XP with the recovery disk that came with my PC, but, no luck.
please help me.

thanks.
