Hi ladies anyone remember me?
I was one of the first ones here! My son Seth was born 6/16/02 with a 6th toe, just outside of the pinky toe. His toe has a fully developed bone and toe nail on it so they were not able to "tie it off" at birth. We were originally told he would have the toe removed at one year, but it took us 4 months (after his first birthday) to see the specialist. When he looked at Seth's foot he said that he would prefer to wait and do the surgery when he is three so the bones will be bigger and the anesthia (sp?) won't be as risky. So my little man still has 11 toes.
The only thing that is hard is finding shoes for him. His foot is considerably wider, the 6th toe grew right out of the ball of his foot, like a normal toe, so his whole foot is actually wider. So when we see sandals that will fit him we stock up on them. LOL.
One gripe I have is when nurses in the Dr.s offices tell me we should just leave the toe there and that they think the Drs won't do anything with it. How will he ever buy shoes if we leave it there?

I think the doctors normall wait until the child is one years old before applying anesthetic (?). So I cannot understand why they would want to wait any longer.
For practical reasons (and others) I would not leave the toe on. Try asking another doctor!
I don't have a problem waiting till
he is 3. If the orthopedic feels better about doing it at 3 that is fine with me. He did say that it would just make the operation easier since his bones are so tiny now. When we went the took an x-ray of his foot and we finally got to see what it looked like, pretty crazy.

Hey! I made it back here! It has been ages and it is good to see you here. In case everyone does not know I started this site in hopes to look for others in my situation and glad to see this board is still in existance even though I have lacked in my participation.
I have two children born with exta toes and my daughter also had webbing of hands and feet. I can not believe they would not do anything until your child is 3. That is quite unbelievable to me! The standered seems to be around a year. My son has had one other surgery to remove the extra skin they left behind and Gloria has had 2 total so far as well on her feet (3 surgeries total on her hand). They want to do another procedure when she is about 10 with some sort of device to help straiten out her big toe. They have to wait for this one because the device is too big for her tiny toes right now.
I am glad I made it back and hope to be here more often and get to know you all!
