How to store things in your hopechest! Hi Ladies, It's important to know how to store your precious keepsakes and other hopechest items so they are preserved for your future home! Do you have special tips or insights for this? Here's a couple of ours. Breakables: Wrap them in white tissue paper. This helps cushion them and protect them from breaking. It's better to wrap breakables in tissue paper than newspaper. This keeps newsprint off of your fabric and other items in your hopechest! How disappointing to one day take out your handmade quilt and part of the forcast from 10 years ago was on it. Paper Items & Books: These should be stored in plastic storage boxes or a plastic zip-lock bag. If you have a cedar chest for a hopechest the acid and oils from the ceder can destroy the paper. Fabrics: These should be wrapped in acid free tissue paper and stored in a paper box, which is in your hopechest. This keeps the oils from the cedar from ruining your fabric and yet it allows the fabric to breathe. These are just a few ideas to help you as you prepare and store items for your future home. I look forward to hearing your suggestions too! Emilee Elizabeth |

Re: How to store things in your hopechest!
Any breakables, such as pictures, tea cups, etc can be wrapped in doilies also. I have lots of doilies that I've gotten at yard-sales to put in my hopechest. So instead of just packing them by themselves...I wrap something breakable/valueable in them and I'm able to pack both

Re: How to store things in your hopechest! Emilee, Thanks for the tips!! I'll have to get my books taken care of right away!!: I had no idea that the cedar could be bad for them!! I store my doilies by rolling them up in muslin (I read that somewhere, but I don't remember the reason for it!), and your supposed to wash the muslin every six months or so (which I haven’t done yet!! Does anyone have suggestions for wrapping quilts up? I don't want those ruined either... Also, how do you ladies have your things arranged in your hope chests? I have so many different shaped things and it gets complicated trying to figure out where to put everything!! Re: How to store things in your hopechest! You can also use extra shoe boxes for breakables. This gives a firmer wall of protection around them. I would use as many small boxes as you can for storage. This makes it easier to pack it in. Blessings, Deb Edited by: singergirl01 at: 3/8/03 8:21:36 pm |

Re: How to store things in your hopechest! I found the book where it said to use muslin, and it’s for the same reason as acid free tissue paper; either way, it said to change the tissue or launder the muslin every six months. (For reference the book is “Timeless Treasures” by Emily Barnes.) Deb, thanks for the shoebox idea!! I wonder why I never thought of that before!!! It’s working out much better! Emma, I knew someone would ask! I just got a liking for them, and when I found out they were having a baby, I was soooo thrilled, as I didn't 'know' anyone else who was expecting. Anyway, I crocheted a baby blanket and they sent me a picture of her with it, so ever since then they've e-mailed me pictures. I've become rather fond of her, you see, and even made her a "first Christmas" bib! She is such a cutie!! Her name is Alyssa and she’s about 6 months old. You are very blest to have a baby sister though!!! That must be wonderful!!! How old is she? Babies are such sweet blessings from the Lord! I'm just enjoying this little one from afar.Blessings in Jesus! Hannah ![]() "But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation" Psalm 13:5 |

I was wondering who the baby was too... My mom (Mrs Lyn) and I thought maybe it was you, Hannah... when you were little. Mom said, "She kinda looks like her!" LOL! Thanks for sharing her picture with us. She's absolutely precious. How wonderful to have a baby sister Emma! I'm sure she is a lot of fun!! I love playing with my 1 year old cousin! She's so sweet. And it won't be long and we'll have two more babies in the family! Yay!! My Aunt and Uncle are expecting!! And my cousin is too! Have a wonderful day in the Lord!
