Hunting Tips I Made Up, THEY WORK!
Start off by walking into the area you are hunting, preferably a day or so before the actual season begins if possible. Try to go in the middle of the day to avoid spooking deer or have deer watch what you are doing. Make sure you have a small garden rake, Doe and Buck Pee (In Spray Bottles works best) and walk to your stand and make something called a “mock scrape” what you will do now is clear out a circle using the small garden rake being careful not to touch ANYTHING removed. Use the rake to remove everything, be sure to remove everything and loosen the soil about 2 inches. After you have done this take and put buck pee on one side and then take and put doe pee on the other side. Also, remember that you must do this where there is a branch or limb sticking down about 4 ½ feet from the ground and be sure to make the “mock scrape” below this. Now spray some doe pee or buck pee, whatever you prefer on that limb above the scrape. Because what deer do is that when they make a scrape they like to reach up and smell the above branches. Only make these scrapes where you are able to shoot, about 10-20 yards from your stand. Do not make these in an open field follow the directions from above. If you are using this stand for morning use I would suggest wearing gloves and breaking off a small twig and throw it in the scrape by doing this you can check the scrape at a distance and know if there have been any deer there by seeing if the stick is missing. Make 2-3 of these around your stand and if you don’t see any doe hoof marks or another scrape made by a male deer (buck) in 2-3 days then move your stand and hunt elsewhere if available. You will want to make these scrapes during the rut, usually Nov1-Nov27 or so. If you follow the above tip you will see bigger deer and will likely get that trophy buck that you have been after.
Before you hunt in the morning take a spray bottle and fill it with apple juice. On the way to your stand spray a few trees within the distance of your deer stand and this will attract deer to the sweet smell. If you want to, I would place it to where you can get a shot off.
This is not a tip, but a warning, do NOT attach deer scent pads to your boots or anywhere else on your body. I have known and heard about some people who have been attacked by a buck deer trying this. Do not do it! Its not worth losing your life over, and that’s right I did say losing your life over because a few people have died from getting attacked.
I highly recommend that during the rut you buy a call called “The Can” from www.primos.com or at any sporting goods store. What it is, is a estrus bleat from a doe during the rut. You will also need a buck grunter, it doesn’t matter what brand you buy there. But, take when the rut starts and blow 3 times on the grunt call, about every 5 seconds or so and then flip the can over 3 times. Do this about every 15-25 minutes and I guarntee if there are any bucks in your area you will draw them to you with this technique. Be careful NOT to overcall.
During early archery season purchase the dial turning call from www.cabelas.com or your local sports store and be sure it has the Buck Ball or BB on the dial. And you will also need a rattle box or bag or antlers, preferably box or bag since your in a tree and the antlers would be big. Take and blow the buck ball twice, each time sounding like a cow. About every 5 seconds. Only blow this twice every 15-25 minutes as well after you do that try doing some light rattling on the rattle box or bag whatever you have, do NOT do it hard just make it small and simple as you would be saying to a buck, “I am having a pushing/shoving match with another buck” and they are likely to come investigate.
