I just finished the book (MAJOR spoilers...beware)
I had a complete heart-attack when my favorite headmaster died. This, IMO, was the best book so far... but also the hardest to read. It was just so sad and scary at parts.

But I also loved the budding romance... I always knew Ginny and Harry would hook up. Then there is the ever growing tension betwen Ron/Hermione.

Overall... it was fantastic. But I was really depressed when I finished it too. Really, in the end, it didn't turn out to be much about the 'Half-Blood Prince,' even though he ended up playing a huge part. But it was more about Harry and Dumbledore learning together about Voldemort's past to better defeat him in the future. I loved it... did You?

I just finished the book about 5 minutes ago. I am so sad at the ending, feeling very empty at the moment. I can't believe Snape....

Anyway, lots of ground work laid for the next book, lots of insight as to where Voldemort came from and how he became this way.

Two more years for the next one (at least, right?)

Re: I just finished the book (MAJOR spoilers...beware)
hi all!

I was a bit disappointed over dumbledores death. I couldnt believe it, especially after Sirius died in the last book.

However, after reading Pheonix, I felt that perhaps Sirius would be back, in some form or another, in book 7. I also have a feeling about Dumbledore returning in 7. Maybe it is just hope lol.

I was thinking about it last night while laying in bed. It took me awhile to fall asleep after Ihad finished reading, lol. Of course I know that he was hit with the killing curse but still, could it have been planned?

Proof his is dead:
Avada Kedavra
His body at the bottom of the tower
His portrait appears in office
funeral

However:
There's supposedly no protection against the killing curse, however could one have been found, or was snapes avada kedavra "empty"? That is spoken but not enforced as he was silently conjuring something that would produce the green light. There was after all a lot of talk of being able to do magic without saying the words.

Also, do you really think dumbledore would plead for his life? Surely Dumbledore is also powerful enough to do magic without a wand and he would have been able to defend himself if he wanted.

Then there is the body....surely after such a long fall he wouldnt appear to be sleeping, he would have been severly damaged. This was not mentioned. Did the polyjuice potion that was often mentioned play a part here? Maybe it was never Dumbledore on top of the tower to begin with or someone else was at the bottom of it? The body was never shown at the funeral as well. It was wrapped up.

It will be interesting to see more about dumbledore's portrait in the next book...will he always be "sleeping"?

oh yes, and Fawkes. Did he leave because his master is dead or did he leave to be with him, and to make it seem like he is dead? I just feel like there is more than meets the eye there. It seems like his work is not yet finished. Playing dead would be a good ploy as it would give Voldemort a sense of false security since he fears only Dumbledore.

Just a few thoughts.

Wow, where to begin? I trust Dumbldore decisions, though he himself admitted that he makes some big ones from time to time. I think the real reason Dumbledore trusted Snape has not been revealed yet. I believe Snape really didn’t want to kill Dumbledore, but had to because of the Unbreakable Vow. If he had not killed Dumbledore, he would have died himself—so he chose to live to keep being a spy for the Order.

Snape gazed for a moment at Dumbledore, and there was revulsion and hatred etched in the harsh lines of his face.

“Serverus…please…” (p. 595)

Perhaps Dumbledore had ordered Snape to act as he did if just such a predicament had occurred. Did Dumbledore plea for his life at the end or was it a reminder to Snape to keep his word to Dumbledore? I want to believe that Snape was just acting. I felt pity for both him and Draco.

I am certain that Dumbledore is dead. His portrait appeared on the wall just like all the other dead leaders. And I believe the school will be open next year. Harry better attend!!!!

Theories on book six - contains spoilers
Hi all,

I have a lot to post here.

1. My daughter and I have hashed out the Snape thing and we have come to the conclusion that Snape was carrying out Dumbledore's direct order. We think that Snape truly is spying for Dumbledore against Voldemort and that his binding promise to Bellatrix and Draco's mother was not necessarily counter to Dumbledore. Dumbledore knew that Draco was going to try to kill him and he didn't want Malfoy to go that far evil, he was trying to "spare his soul", so by making the binding promise to help Draco in the end to keep his commitment to the dark lord, Snape was keeping his previous commitment to Dumbledore to kill him when he begged for it. Dumbledore was probably going to die anyway from the amount of poison he had drunk.

2. The two pendants and the note. I noted that the note which Harry found in the pendant which was the supposed Horcrux was addressed to "To the Dark Lord:" and signed RAB. First of all, only a Death Eater, or previous Death Eater, would address Voldemort as the Dark Lord. Since the person stated that he had figured out Voldemort's secret and was going to destroy the Horcrux and knew he would be killed for it, I figure he was a former Death Eater. I think Voldemort's secret, which is known to all of us, but I don't think is known to any of the Death Eaters, is that Voldemort is a mudblood. Which brings me to the family that hates mudbloods the most. The Blacks. Sirius's brother, Regulus, was a Death Eater. It has been mentioned that he tried to get out of the death eaters but Voldemort had him killed. My supposition is that Regulus, assisted by Kreacher, went to the island and obtained the true Horcrux. That would fit with the initials in the note RAB.

3. Clue on pendant Horcrux from book 5. When everyone was at Sirius's house in the Order of the Phoenix, Molly was going through a drawer that contained some magic objects. One of them was a locket that would not open.

4. Way out theory on the 7th Horcrux. A few of us at work are bandying about the possibility that the 7th Horcrux might just be the scar on Harry's forehead. Just think of the possibilities.

OK, that's all for now.

Re: Theories on book six - contains spoilers
Hey, guys, new to this board, but anyway. I just finished the Half blood prince a few days ago. I was mainly just angry after I read it, because of Snapes treachery. But I definitely think that it was the best one yet.

Now as for Dumbledore's death. When I first read it I was completely expecting it to be false, that he would just be faking, or it was all planned, but now that I've had time to go back and re-read certain parts, I think that it was for real.

Reasons:
-We all know that the DADA teacher never stays, therefore we know that Snape is gone for good.
-Avada kedavra kills. That's all there is to it.
-This is going to further Harry's determination to destroy Voldemort and Snape.
-I think that although Snape had turned to the good side, when he found out that his old master had returned, he couldn't resist...

But to leave with a question...will there only be 7 books, and does anyonek know if Hogwarts is really going to be closed, and will the 7th book take place away from Hogwarts...?

that's a great theory about RAB! wow, i'm really amazed! and about the locket horcrux...i'm going to have to read that part again where molly found a locket that wouldn't open...that's kind of scary! i do think dumbledore is gone and truly dead but i think harry will probably talk to his portrait in book 7. for some reason i get the feeling petunia is going to give harry something special in book 7 since he will be "coming of age", maybe something lily left behind for him.

Re: Theories on book six - contains spoilers
Hi I just finished the book, and I am still digesting Dumbeldores death, but I have just been wondering one thing through the book:

the marks on Dumbeldores hand.. he did claim they came as a result of destroying Morfin's ring, but what I keep wondering is whether it could be the result of an Unbreakable Vow. Is it possible that Dumbeldore took Polyjuice potion and became Snape for the purpose of the meeting with Narcissa? Could he have asked Snape to kill him because he knew either Malfoy would have to kill him or he would die anwyay as a result of the curse?

In the end though I suppose I am just wishing that he wasnt dead, it is going to take awhile to let that one sink in. Snape had a choice between the taking of his life or the taking of another life, and he chose the latter, and now he must suffer the consequences for the rest of his life, however shot that may be.

I do however have to wonder how long book 7 will be if it is to be the final book. Harry must search and destroy 4 Horcurxes, Voldermort to kill, and that is not even touching on the concept of further schooling, Quidditch, and romance. Sounds like a tall order for just one book since it took 6 books to destroy 2 of the horcruxes alone.

I like that theory about who RAB is. Never even thought of it.
Okay, I just finished this book yesterday. Took me four days to read it. Weren't there supposed to be Aurors protecting Hogworts? Where were they when the Deatheaters showed up and started blasting things?
I do believe Dumbledore is dead, but I believe he made the sacrifice to keep Snape's cover intact and that Snape is actually still on the side of right. If he wasn't, he could have pretty easily killed Hermione, Luna and Prof. Flitwick on his way to do in Dumbledore, rather than leave them pretty much intact.
I suspect that Dumbledore did all that talking with Malfoy in order to keep Malfoy from making that final step into darkness. Albus is just that kind of guy.
There does seem to be a lot to do in book 7, and Harry is being a bit silly in book 6 thinking he can do all of that on his own. He may be 'the Chosen One', but he just doesn't have the legs to do that much running around.
Now, about those missing Aurors...
