I need to redo my 340 heads.
I need some suggestions on what to do with my 340 heads. They are the 915 "J" heads and need a rebiuld.Right now they are stock (no porting) with 2.02" intake /1.60" and have crane iron adjustable rockers with stock springs. My cam is .480 lift/292 duration but I might change that while I`m in there. My options are to buy the Edelbrock aluminum heads, have my "J" heads ported and redone or buy a set of "X" or newer swirl port heads to have redone.#1 chioce are the Edelbrocks but they are $1200 + shafts and rockers which is stretching the budget. If I do my "J" heads where should I have them done?..Hensley,Hughes,...???These are for my `72 Barracuda 3400 lbs/4 spd /3.91`s.runs mid 13`s right off the street and would like to see a high 12 with the new heads and maybe a cam change.Any suggestions on the heads, cam, rockers(maybe roller tips) etc. will help.Bottom end is steel crank,10.5 TRW forged pistons(~10.0-1 comp.),balanced etc.

340 heads
If it were me... I'd use the heads you've got,put in new bronze wall valve guides,PC seals, have a quality valve job done on them.Port the heads yourself.Just do a minor cleanup using gaskets as a guide.Do the porting first then the other work.

Re: I need to redo my 340 heads.
I decided to have my heads redone by a local guy,New Hampshire Competition. He runs a stock class Max Wedge car and does a lot of work for the local racers. He also was in a magazine article in Mopar Muscle or High Performance Mopar on head porting. He will go through them and do whatever they need plus some mild porting. He also recomended going to the Mopar .509/292 cam and that should easily get me into the 12`s!I think I might need some stickier tires, maybe some DOT legal Hoosiers or M/T s.Hey Barry,I must really be killing you now ,huh?:evil :b

you did the right thing,J's are better than edelbrocks,do a good gasket match, mild bowl port and polish, good guides, try fitting a thicker pushrod in there and a roller cam and you will make those $1300 heads look like an awful waste of $1300!!you might want also take .010 off the surface just to make sure they are true.
