I was born with extra fingers
well, I don't have any polydactyly children of my own yet but I'm fairly sure I will one day... Both my siblings have the same little scar on our pinky fingers to remind us that everyone seems to get it. Guess the genes are right for it in a big way.
I am 22 years old. Are there any others on here that aren't just parents of polydactyl kids but had the extra digits themselves as well?
Alot of women in our family have extra digits (hands and/or feet) - I had an extra finger on each hand, but no extra toes. Of my two kids, the first was *normal* (how disappointed was I?) and the second had extra fingers too.
Cool thing - we got the ultrasound tech to zoom in on her hands (at 18 weeks) and were able to *count* there were too many!! LOL - it totally freaked the tech out! They just tied them off a day after she was born and it took about 10 days till the pinkies dried up. Yup, I saved one in the baby box.
Stacey - Now we both have those characteristic "moon shaped" scars! She says God made her special... Still regret not casting her hand first but he did get a painted handprint on a t-shirt to remeber.
Welcome!
Welcome to you guys for visiting our board...sorry I have been MIA for awhile due to computer diffulculties. I have not had extra fingers or toes but my DH has had both. We welcome your experiences and thoughts!
My son has 6 toes but
we don't know of anyone on either side of the family with extra digits! My son's toe however has a bone and everything in it so he will have to have his removed by surgery sometime after his first birthday!

extra fingers and toes
I was born with extra fingers and toes, so were 3 of my children(out of10). So was my mother and several relatives. Found out years later, we had a condition called Pallister-hall syndrome, one of the characteristics being extra digits. Most of us didn't have any problems associated with the syndrome so we never knew we had it until 2 of our relatives had MRI's.

Re: extra fingers and toes
Can you descirbe to us what exactly Pallister-hall syndrome is? They have told us that my Dh and 2 of my children have Greig syndrome (only by talking to us and looking at them...no tests of any sorts)
Thanks and it is good to see yet another person hanging out here.

Re: extra fingers and toes
hi
i am new to this forum and i am glad that i found it. its hard to find any kind of information and other things about polydactyly, being born with extra fingers and/or toes. i am 19 and i have two younger brothers, however i was the only one to be born with extra digits. i was born with with 6 toes on right foot-nail, bone, joint and everything. it was removed before i turned 3 yrs old. and it seems it runs in my family like every 2 to 3 generations depending on what side, for both of my sides of my family had relatives that were born with either extra toes or/and extra fingers. i have the scar still but its not noticeable and as for the operation the doctor removed the extra one not my fifth one. its cool. i have no illness and i know that any children i have can it and i dont mind. and i was wondering if anyone has any medical information on polydactyly, especially of the case of not having any diseases. i am doing a research project on it. i appreciate any help. thanks.

My 3 1/2 year old son was born with a partial extra thumb complete with bone and everything. At the time we were told that it was probably just a fluke since no one in my family or my husband's family have extra digits. We had the extra digit surgically removed when he was 1 year and you would hardly know it had been there. Just a week ago I had my second child who was also born with a partial second thimb with bone on one hand. Now I am a little concerned because it appears that this is something genetic. I am aware that there are several types of syndromes that polydactyly is a symptom of, but would like to learn more. Can you tell me a little about Greig Syndrome? Do you have any suggestions on who I should go see to learn more about whether either of my children have one of these syndromes? I do not know where to start.

extra thumb
I was born with an extra bone in my left thumb. I have 5 brothers and sisters and none of them had it, my parents didn't have it nor did any of their brothers and sisters. My first son did not have any extra digits, but my second son has double thumbs on both hands! I have no idea where it came from or how I was so lucky to receive this gene.
I passed it on to my daughter
I was born with a 6th finger on my right hand, all that is left is a little bump there. Though it hurts like hell if I ever scratch it. Very odd.
In an anthropology class in college, my teacher said this genetic trait is dominant, and every child of mine will have a 50/50 shot of the same thing. Sure enough, my daughter was born with 10 1/2 toes, well waddaya know. Her big toe splits off in to 2 at the last bone - she has 1 really big toe and it kinda looks like 2 nails. In an X-Ray though it's clear as day.
extra thumbs
I was born with extra thumbs on each hand. The right thumb was bigger than the one the doctor removed and it is bent and hard to use. The left thumb was slightly bent with just a thumb but no bone. I am now 50 yrs. old and the bends in the thumbs are very evident and arthritis has set in. The "nubs" are VERY sensetive.
extra toes
i was born with eight toes on one foot and each had bones. I'm now 29 and have a foot like no one else. With no big toe but 5 little ones. My 3 extra's were removed when I was 2 and 7 years old.
Re: I was born with extra fingers
Hi I am 21 and I was the only person in my family or that my family had ever heard of with extra digits. I was born with 6 toes on each foot and 6 fingers on each hand. I have two daughters but they did not have extra digits, I was starting to think I was the only one untill I found this site!
Re: I was born with extra fingers
Thank you all for sharing your experiences with polydactyly.
My daugher has an extra thumb on her right hand. She is now 7 months old and it will be removed when she is 10 months old.
I have some concerns because she has no webbing inbetween her real thumb and first finger, hence not much of a span. She also doesn't seem to have that much movement in her real thumb and tucks and hide's it away. Her real thumb is allot smaller that the one on her left hand.
Has anyone else overcome having a smaller thumb once the extra digit has been removed. Is there anything I can be doing to help my daughter before she has surgery to help her get use of the real thumb.
Is the "nub" really as tender as you all say, should I be asking my doctor something inparticular.
Thank you all for your time and reading my posting. With all this possible other syndromes that my daughter could have I am become a little over paranoid about it all.
