Introduction and research help
Hi,

I am a NASA engineer with an amateur interest in archeology particularly Sumerian and Babylonian history.

I have found several references to a tunnel that supposedly was built under the Euphrates river around 2180 BC. It was built by diverting the river and digging a trench across the dried river bottom. Next an arch was made of bricks and asphalt in the cut. Then, the cut was backfilled with river soil. Finally, the river was released.

However, every one of thess references simply states that this happened. Not one of them says where they got the information.

I would really like to find the origin of this. Any suggestions for places to search would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Introduction and research help
Can you list some of the sources that describe this event? And do they say WHY it was done?

One problem I can see with this, right away, was that the path of the river meandered; it changed slightly every flood season and over the centuries it has changed significantly. Since the ancient mesopotamians observed the river's course changing, why would they build such a tunnel, when it would eventually become useless to them (flooded or filled with silt)?

You work for NASA- are you in the Houston area?
