Is Starcraft the best RTS ever? There have been many real-time strategy over the last few years. Warcraft II, the Command and Conquer series, Deadlock I and II, and many others preceeded Starcraft. Several games came after, most notably the recent Age of Kings and Red Alert 2. But when it comes down to it, Starcraft is (to my knowledge) the most popular RTS ever. Is it /your/ favorite, though? If it isn't, then please list your favorite RTS and explain /why/ it's your favorite. If Starcraft is your favorite RTS, please explain why.Show results [ToJ]Tek7 |

Re: Is Starcraft the best RTS ever?
By the way, I'm posting this poll in the hopes of discovering other RTS games. I've played a few, but I've always come back to Starcraft...

Re: Is Starcraft the best RTS ever? AGE OF EMPIRES AND AGE OF EMPIRES 2 ALL THE WAY!!!! AOE2 kicks SC's little behind so bad, that SC has to go running to mommy clutching its britches and crying. Ummmm, I geuss you get my point...no need to elaborate.

AOE and AOE2 I would agree with you if AOE and AOE2 did not take for ever to beat one scenerio. It just takes way to much time for me to get into. |

Re: AOE and AOE2 Well, I haven't played any AOE (although I intend on getting it soon) I still believe SC will be the best, primarily due to the fact that (well so I've heard) AOE takes forever to do any kinda of game, while SC takes 'bout 30 mintues for a good 1v1 (maybe 2v2?) on that ever popular (and stupid) map:Lost Temple...plus I like the varying races in SC... |

Re: Is Starcraft the best RTS ever? So far, yes StarCraft is the best RTS ever. I've never played AOE btw does AOE have a campaign editor? Thing is that most of the time i read an review of a new RTS the author of the article likes to compare the newly release RTS game with the old StarCraft game and uses the game value of SC as a bases of how good the newly release game is. Why? I don't know. Kinda bias in a way but i've read a few reviews that includes the SC name at least once. Anyways, this just shows how big the old game is. So far it's about the best RTS. |

Re: Is Starcraft the best RTS ever? Yes and yes. In that order. Yes number one goes to Sir Nukes, Yes I did play Star Craft. Yes number two goes to Dave, Yes AOE has a scenario editor....and one heck of one at that. I personally don't like to play Starcraft when it is sooo dated and there are so many other rts games that are alot better. OOOOHHH I said it! Now I'm in trouble!

Re: Is Starcraft the best RTS ever? *cough* better? Remember, a game is not based on looks alone :) (Command & Conquer Tiberien Sun looked much nicer than old SC, but it blew IMO, and I don't see how RA2 could be any better, oh and a quick question, wasn't RA1 the expansion for C&C1 or 2? Oh and is RA2 based on the C&C:TS engine?) |

Re: Is Starcraft the best RTS ever? I've played a lot of RTS's and I would have to say StarCraft is the all time best. I've played AOE2, and I really didn't like it, SC blew it away. I compare all RTS's to SC, and AOE2 didn't even compare, IMO. |

Re: Is Starcraft the best RTS ever? I play both, though I've been an Ager far longer, for more than 2 years now It's a hard question for me: I like the differing styles. So I'm not going to vote RshScks--I actually found the AOK scenarios to take less time. Maybe that's cause I'm better at it, though. AOK AI players don't seem as good, to me, though. ------------- |

Re: Is Starcraft the best RTS ever?
For me SC and AoK are different. I play AoK when I want to go for a more historical game, and I play SC whenever I am in a more futuristic ood. To tell the truth, I much prefer AoK, I guess I just like archaic warfare more.

MY OPINION WHY AM I POSTING MY OPINION? BECAUSE IT'S THE ONLY ONE THAT COUNTS.... ok, nm. I lied... but here's my opinion anyway... I've played competitive style Starcraft and Age of Empires II. I've also played Warcraft (a couple times) and Warcraft II. I also have played Tiberian Sun and Red Alert. I've played the Submarine Titans demo as well as Age of Empires, Rise of Rome, and a hoarde of others. (Submarine Titans is more funNY than fun) The only game I've played that comes close to the replayability and fun factor of Starcraft is Age of Empires II and Warcraft II. I'll go ahead and list what's good and what's bad about each game. I'll just go into gameplay/multiplayer and not bother with scenario editors and other add-on features. Starcraft ------------- Pros: 3 fairly balanced races (Z>>P, P~T, Z~T) Fast paced Different damage types 3 unique races that each have a different playing style Generally well written AI (notable bad ones are reavers and goliaths; also note bad is relative to the rest of the SC units) Good pathing Air units Special abilities (mines, storm, swarm, web, and lock are the most notable) Waypoints/waypoint queing Unit sizes Cons: UI only supports 12 units per group UI only supports 1 building selected at once Age of Empires II ------------------- Pros: 13 civilizations Specific counter units with bonuses against certain unit types UI supports around 35-40 units UI supports multiple building selection Tons of units and unit upgrades Four resources Customizable hotkeys that you can do almost anything with Cons: Games typically take longer (30-60 minutes for AoK, 7-25 minutes for SC) Rushing (Feudal rush is about 5 minutes RT and Castle is where major battles begin to occur) is almost completely nullified Defensive buildings (oftentimes used offensively) are overpowered Micro is non-existant when talking relative to SC Waypoints can't be que'ed up after commands have been issued(?) WarCraft II is an older game, but it was way fun... I won't bother listing pros/cons for it since it's outdated. Nonetheless, it was a great game and one of the only games that compares to SC. Analysis: SC (Starcraft) is much more fastpaced and action packed than AoK (Age of Empires II: Age of Kings). The differences in the three races in SC are much greater; the differences in races in AoK is slight; they are all pretty much the same. They have a unique unit, a unique research, and a few units not available depending on the race as well as race bonuses. The SC races differ so much more. Micromanagement in AoK does not make much of a difference, but in SC, micro can make a ton of difference. Against most pubbie b.net players, I could hold an almost infinite amount of attacks with 1/4 the amount of units in resources (or less) by micro. Micro is a skill. AoK takes out the effect of micro too much. Buildings in AoK take forever to kill without seige units. Offensive towers/TC's/castles are way overpowered because of that. Yes, it is more realistic, but it takes too much away from the game. Realistic is not always the best. The best is the most enjoyable to play and the most balanced. If you notice from my pros and cons of each game, Starcraft is the better game, but AoK has a better UI (user interface). Don't get me wrong, AoK is still a great game, but Starcraft is still superior to it. No matter what RTS I play, I always end up wanting to go back to Starcraft. Blizzard does what it does best in that game: perfecting what's already been done. AoK has some innovation and realistic features, but Blizzard's masterpiece easily outdoes it in entertainment. Also, my opinion isn't from some BGH newbie either (and neither am I a walling DM newbie). I don't know if you know about NoHunters, but I'm around average skill level in there. If you don't know what NoHunters or -x17 is, chances are that you are not *very* great (ever heard of Heavy Metal, Deep Six, Goon contain, Zerg free expansion?). In AoK, I play RM mode on random maps and typically random civilization. I'm not trying to brag, just trying to bring up my credibility on this post. I am a fairly competitive and competent player, and this is my views from such. There is no game like Starcraft currently on the market. There are a few games that are close, and fun to play, but Starcraft is still superior in gameplay even after 3+ years. - Kenji Yoshida

Re: Is Starcraft the best RTS ever? I think someone told me this before, that Starcraft maybe the only game with Use Map Setting games(RPG's too). Then again I played UMS on AOK like Robin Hood and etc. I can't really explain it, or make it more precise, all I know is Starcraft is a great game, most of my days when I walk through my school' halls, I hear lots of people talking about Starcraft, I guessing their goals is to be a Computer Programmer, or Computer Game Programmer or more in the words of "Computer.....something". When I started playing Starcraft, it was when I went to my dad's work(Computer Store). He had some friends that he could burn cause I was a computer game freak.(says my mom =)) When I saw Starcraft CD case, its like a whole new 'me' came alive. Just when I saw it, I played and got addicted through it till about 2 months ago. Its fun, its exciting, it has 3 cool races. =) *YAWN* |

Re: Is Starcraft the best RTS ever? SC CAN BLOW AOE 1+2 OUT OF THE WATER ANY DAY!!!!!!!! COMPARED TO SC, AOE IS JUST A LITTLE BOY CRYING OUT FOR HIS MOMMY AND DADDY, WHILE SC IS JUST LIKE SOME ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, TERMINATOR THING!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Is Starcraft the best RTS ever? See, Kralgon thinks AOK is slow and boring because he has not yet discovered the fun of DM... "Welcome to the dark side"--that's what us old DMers say to new people trying it out ;) ------------- |
