Chapter One

"Are you glad to see me Kay?"

"I am Reese, I really am." Kay Bennett said smiling into blue eyes no longer hidden behind the thick black glasses. And she meant it, she thought in surprise, she meant every word of it. She had watched Reese Durkey risk his life again and again tonight. He hadn't given a thought to himself. Unlike her. She lowered her head in shame. All she had thought about tonight was herself and getting Miguel away from Charity. This was all her fault. If she hadn't been so damn selfish none of this would have happened.

A tear slowly slid down her cheek, but before she could reach up and wipe it away, Reese was there pulling her into his arms. She didn't pull away like she normally would have. For the first time, she actually welcomed his embrace. She welcomed his hands rubbing her back and his voice whispering soothing words to her. For the first time in her life, she was grateful that Reese was there beside her.

As the tears continued to fall, Kay wrapped her arms around Reese and hung on for dear life. Then she made a promise to herself that if they made it home safely, she would never again treat Reese like he was something she had stepped in. She made another promise to give up on Miguel. She had finally realized tonight that Miguel loved Charity and she made the decision to stop chasing after him. She no longer liked the person she had become. She no longer respected herself. But she would, she thought, she would like herself again. All she needed was the chance to change.

~*~*~*~*~*~

Reese Durkey put his hand on the back of Kay's head and continued to stroke her hair. She made no move to break the embrace they were in, which baffled him really. She never let him hold her. Maybe the scare they all had tonight had finally broken down those walls that were so high around her heart. He'd tried everything else, but nothing seemed to work. He had decided earlier tonight to give up his pursuit of her, because she obviously wasn't interested. He figured that she would never see him as anything, but a geek. But then again, here she was in his arms. Letting him hold her. Letting him comfort her.

It only because Miguel isn't here, he told himself. He had seen the way she looked at Miguel when she thought no one was looking. He knew she was in love with him. He had hoped she would give him a chance to win her heart, but she never had. If he was honest with himself, he knew she never would. So why couldn't he just let her go? Because you love her, his heart answered. He knew it was true, but he wished to God it wasn't. Loving Kay Bennett just hurt too much.

"Kay?" Reese whispered against her hair. "It'll be all right. We'll be okay. I promise."

She raised her head and looked at him. He sucked in a breath as his blue eyes met her tear filled brown eyes. His heart ached at the pain he saw in them. He'd never seen so much pain in all his life. Something was eating her up inside. He could see it. But he knew she would never trust him enough to tell him. She only trusted Miguel or Simone with the secrets of her heart. God, how he wished just once she would trust him.

"Reese, this is all my fault." She said pulling him back to her and resting her head on his shoulder. "All of it. It's all my fault."

Reese didn't know what to do. She really seemed to believe this disaster was her fault, but how could it be? How could she have been responsible for a storm? There was no way. She was just in shock, he thought. She was taking the blame for something she had no control over. Maybe it was the coldness of the water affecting her or maybe the fear for her father. Or maybe she was just worried about Miguel.

"Kay," he said pulling back and placing his hand under her chin to force her to meet his eyes. "None of this is your fault. This storm came out of nowhere. No one could have known it was coming. No one."

"No, you don't understand." She said shaking her head causing him to drop his hand. "I was the one that did it. I was the one that -"

"Kay!" Simone yelled from beside them. "Reese is right. You had nothing to do with this storm!"

Reese watched something pass between them and wondered what it was. He knew Kay and Simone had a lot of secrets between them, but something was different about this one. This time it seemed as if Simone was worried Kay would tell him something. Something she, for some reason, didn't want him to know. That was rather odd, he thought rubbing the back of his neck. Usually, it was Kay stopping Simone from telling something.

"Kay, why would you think this storm was your fault? What do you think you did?" Reese asked searching her eyes, begging her to trust him with what was worrying her.

She returned his stare for a full three seconds then closed her eyes and he knew before she even opened them again that she was going to shut him out. Would she ever let him in? No, he thought sighing in frustration, and that is the reason, he had to let her go. She would never confide in him. And that hurt more than he would ever admit to anyone.

"I'm sorry Reese." Kay said pulling away from him. "I'm just not myself right now. I'm just scared I guess and when I get scared I tend to ramble and make no sense whatsoever. Of course, there is no way this storm could be my fault. It's crazy to think it could be."

The look in her eyes didn't match the words she spoke. She was lying, he could see it… he could feel it. For some reason, she really did blame herself for what happened on that boat tonight. But he knew she would never tell him why. To do that she would have to trust him and he knew she would never give him a chance to earn that trust. She never gave him a chance at anything.

He nodded and went to sit by Jessica. He could feel Kay's eyes on him, but he refused to look at her. He wouldn't allow her to treat him as if he wasn't good enough anymore. It was time he gave up the lost cause of making Kay Bennett fall in love with him. Her heart already belonged to someone else anyway and even if it didn't, she would never give it to him. Not in a million years could he ever be that lucky.

~*~*~*~*~

Kay had never been so relieved in her life as she was when the boat pulled into the pier. Just as she started to exit the boat, a hand shot out to help her. She placed her own inside it then looked up to see Reese staring down at her. He looked different without his glasses and his hair slicked back. He looked... decent, kind of sexy. Whoa, she thought, she must be losing it if Reese Durkey was starting to look sexy. But then tonight he had proved to be, not the geek she always thought him, but a man, a very brave man that risked his life to save people aboard a sinking prom boat. For that, she thought, he deserved a medal. But she had no medal to give him. Then again, she had something better. Something she knew he would appreciate.

She stepped out of the boat and when Reese started to pull away from her, she tugged on his hand. He looked at her startled and seemed to freeze where he stood. She smiled and stepped closer to him. Then she placed a kiss on his cheek. "You were terrific tonight, Reese. I saw you help all those people get off the boat. You risked your life for them. Not only that but you held me while I cried even after I've been so awful to you. I'm so sorry Reese. I'm so sorry for treating you the way I have. You don't deserve it. And you know what else? I don't deserve you."

He started to say something, but she just shook her head and walked away before he had the chance to say anything. She didn't want to hear him tell her how great she was. She knew it was a lie. Tonight she had humiliated her own cousin by dumping fish guts on her, at what was possibly one of the happiest moments in her life, all because the boy she loved was in love with her. God, Simone and Jessica were right, she really was a monster.

"What are you up to Kay?" Jessica said gripping her arm and coming to stand in front of her. "I heard what you told Reese. What kind of scheme are you planning now?"

Kay felt the tears start to well in her eyes and she could tell Jessica was as surprised by them as she was. "Jess, I swear I meant every word I told Reese. It wasn't a scheme or a plot or anything. It was the truth."

Jessica gave her a look that said she didn't believe her then turned and walked over to Reese, who still standing where she left him a few moments before. She couldn't blame them for being surprised or for not believing her. But she had meant what she said. She had learned her lesson tonight and she planned to keep the promises she made on that raft tonight too. She would stop trying to break up Miguel and Charity. She would stop treating Reese as if he wasn't fit to breathe the same air as she was. But most of all, she would stop being the self-centered bitch she had been since Charity came into their lives. She was through planning and scheming to get what she wanted. From now on, she was going to be a person she could respect and maybe, just maybe one day she would be able to forgive herself for the tragedy she had caused tonight.

Chapter Two

Reese woke the next morning to the wonderful sound of birds chirping outside. He had never been so glad to hear anything in his entire life, except maybe the words Kay had told him last night. He had seen the sincerity in her eyes when she spoke so he knew she meant them. He could still feel the pressure of her lips against his cheek as she kissed him. He would have thought he was dreaming had he not seen the surprised look on Jessica’s face.

Smiling, he reached for his extra pair of glasses on the nightstand beside his bed. It had taken him a good two hours to find them last night. He had been so tired and his eyes had been so unfocused, he still wasn’t sure how he managed it. He ran a hand over his face then put his glasses on and threw back the covers. He needed a shower and judging by the little bit of stubble he felt on his face a few moments before, a shave would probably be a good idea too.

After grabbing a pair of jeans off a hanger in his closet, he made his way into the bathroom and turned on the water. He’d just stepped under the sprayer and doused himself with water when he heard the doorbell ring. He knew his folks were probably already at work so he jumped back out and wrapped a towel around his waist. He figured it was probably Miguel wanting to talk about last night. He’d said he would stop by today. He wasn’t sure exactly what happened last night between him and Charity, but he knew it was something big. Miguel had not been himself last night… not at all.

He opened the bathroom door then made his way into the living room, not realizing he was dripping water all over the plush beige carpet. He tripped going up the stairs that led to the door because like an idiot he’d left his glasses sitting on the bathroom cabinet. Shaking his head at his lack of memory, he pulled open the door and promptly froze. Unless his eyesight was getting worse, which at this point didn’t’ seem too far out of the question, was the woman of his dreams – Kay Bennett.

But he soon realized that was crazy. After all, why would Kay be coming to see him? She never had before, unless of course it was because Miguel was with her. Miguel, he thought with a frown that’s why she was here. She must have found out that Miguel was coming over this morning. He forced the disappointment from his face and fixed her with a smile. “Hello, Kay.”

~*~*~*~*~

Kay tried to answer him, she really did. But somehow she’d lost her ability to speak – and breathe. Reese Durkey stood in the doorway with water dripping off his blond hair and sliding over his muscular chest toward the edge of the towel knotted at his waist. He looked like he just stepped from the cover of the latest issue of Playgirl magazine. She swallowed hard as the realization of what he wasn’t wearing under that towel hit her. She watched as a muscle in his chest flexed then cursed inwardly. What was she doing checking Reese out like that? She raised her eyes to look at him and felt her breath catch in her throat. He looked, as he had last night, no glasses and hair slicked back off his face. The stubble on his face made him look rugged and sexy.

Sexy? Reese? She shook her head as she realized that was the second time in the last twenty-four hours she had called him sexy. Why? He was still Reese. He just looked different without the geeky glasses and clothes. Her eyes traveled back down over his broad shoulders to his well-defined pecs and she had to ball her hands into a fist to keep from reaching out and touching him.

“Kay?” He questioned in a voice she had never heard him use.

“S...s.. sorry.” She stammered raising her eyes to meet his. They were such an intense blue that she lost whatever thought she had been about to say. She managed to take a deep breath then tried again. “I… you… I wasn’t…”

She let out a nervous laugh then lowered her head to the ground. She wasn’t going to be able to form a complete sentence. Not when he looked like a Greek god and certainly not when he was wearing nothing but a towel. Now that she wasn’t looking at him, she felt calmer somehow. Her emotions weren’t running as wild. Her emotions… why were her emotions running away with her when she looked at Reese? Maybe it was that dream she’d had last night, of him holding her while she cried and kissing away her tears. She wasn’t sure why she had dreamed of Reese kissing her, but she had. And in her dream, he’d been wearing his glasses. He’d been the same Reese she had known for years, but somehow in her dream he’d been different… or she had been different. Maybe the difference was the fact that in her dream she’d actually seen who he was on the inside and what she saw had made her forget all about what he looked like on the outside.

“Oh god.” He said opening the door wider. “I… I’m sorry, Kay. I thought… Let me just go get dressed. I’ll be right back. Why don’t’ you come in and wait. It will only take me a minute.“

She nodded and took a step forward but because she’d raised her head to look at him, she missed seeing the high step in front of her and because of that she tripped. She screamed as she started to fall forward, but she suddenly lost her voice altogether as she fell into Reese’s arms. She heard his quick intake of breath as her body fell against his. She could feel the water on his skin start to seep through her dress and then all thought fled her mind as something slid down her legs. Neither of them moved or even breathed as his towel hit the floor. Her eyes met his and he she would have laughed at the expression on his face had she been able to. But she couldn’t manage to breath let alone laugh. The only thing that separated their bodies was her thin cotton sundress and it certainly didn’t hide the effects of his arousal.

His eyes lowered to her mouth and she unconsciously licked her lips. Reese let out a groan then pulled her closer and covered her lips with his. The first touch of his lips sent her emotions skyrocketing. It was different than the other kisses they had shared. Those had been instigated to try to make Miguel jealous or because of a misunderstanding. This one… This one was more than that. This one was passionate and intense. This one affected her. This one really affected her. Just as the kiss began to deepen, someone spoke from behind them. “Uh, sorry guys, I’ll just come back another time.”

Kay froze as she realized who that voice belonged to. Reese pulled back in the same instant and as their eyes met, she had no doubt he was as surprised by what had happened as she was. He stepped back away from her and that’s when she got the bird’s eye view of Reese in all his glory.

~*~*~*~*~

Reese noticed the shocked look on Kay’s face and it took him a moment to figure out the reason why. But when he did, he couldn’t hide his the heat that rose to his cheeks. He quickly reached down, fastened the towel back around his hips then sent her an apologetic smile. His eyes caught a slight movement and forced him to look away from her. His eyes landed on Miguel who was standing in the doorway with the same shocked look Kay had. He didn’t blame him. Had he been the one to walk up on this same scene, he would have been just as shocked. Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined Kay kissing him like that or the look in her eyes after they’d broke apart. Right before her eyes widened, he had caught a tiny glimpse of desire and knowing that desire was for him caused all sorts of emotions to run through him. First and foremost was complete and utter shock. The second was amazement and the third was outright disbelief.

Reese noticed that Miguel was starting to back away. “Miguel, wait, you don’t have to leave. This… this isn’t what it looked like.”

Miguel chuckled slightly but the sound almost seemed forced. “Are you sure about that Reese? I mean… it looked like-”

“I’m sure.” Reese said interrupting him before he could finish the statement. “Look let me go get dressed and then we can talk, okay?”

Miguel nodded and walked inside, closing the door behind him as he did. Reese looked at Kay and when he noticed she looked a little pale, he reached out a hand and placed one finger under her chin forcing her to meet his eyes again. “Are you okay?”
She nodded slightly then whispered a faint, “yes.”

“Okay,” Reese said lowering his hands but still looking in her eyes. “I’ll be back in just a minute. You can explain to Miguel what happened.”

Her eyes widened slightly but she didn’t say anything. She just nodded then sucked in a deep breath and turned around to face Miguel. Something passed between them and Reese wondered just how Miguel felt about Kay. He knew how Kay felt about him or he thought he did at least, but how did Miguel feel about her? If he cared about her half as much as Kay cared about him, Reese knew he would never stand a chance. It didn’t matter that a few moments ago she had been in his arms kissing him like there was no tomorrow. He knew that if Miguel gave her the slightest encouragement, Reese Durkey would no longer exist to her. She would forget all about what had just happened between them, whereas he… he didn’t think he would ever forget.

Reese shook his head then turned and made his way back into his bathroom. He heard Kay speaking with Miguel and he figured she was explaining why she was in his arms and how he had kissed her. Was she going to tell him that she kissed him back? Or would she leave that part out? Grabbing his clothes off the cabinet, he quickly began to get dressed. Once he was done, he decided to do a quick shave. After all, Kay and Miguel probably had things to talk about. The least he could do is give them some time to do it.

Chapter Three

Kay looked into the eyes of the boy she had loved nearly all her life and yet she couldn’t seem to get Reese out of her head. That kiss had knocked her for a loop as did the birds eye view she got after it. Who knew Reese had a body like that? She shook her head hoping to clear it of Reese’s naked image. It didn’t work. The image was still there burning a hole into her brain.

“Kay?” Miguel asked walking toward her and brushing her cheek with the knuckles of his right hand. “Are you okay?”

She froze in shock as his knuckles grazed her cheek. Miguel had never touched her like that. He unfolded his hand and placed it at the back of her neck then brought her face closer to his. He dipped his head to kiss her, but at the last second she turned her head and he ended up kissing her hair instead.

She stepped back away from him then looked into his shocked brown eyes and conveyed with her own eyes what her voice wouldn’t allow her to say. So many times she had dreamed of Miguel leaning in to kiss her, but it never once crossed her mind that the day he would she would no longer want him to. And today was the day that she didn’t. She didn’t want him to kiss her. She didn’t want him period. She wanted – Reese. She wanted him to be the one leaning in to kiss her. She wanted him to be the one to touch her face and look at her in concern... genuine concern.

She wasn’t sure what was going on but she knew whatever it was it had started last night when he held her in his arms. She had dreamed of him last night… of him kissing her and him holding her in his arms. And today he had… only he hadn’t looked like the Reese she knew. He looked like someone else. She wouldn’t lie to herself and say she wasn’t happy with the way he looked today. She was… but she also liked the man she saw last night. The one who lost his glasses in the sea after he had saved dozens of people aboard a sinking prom boat.

She no longer cared that people thought he was a geek. It no longer mattered to her. He had proven he was more than that. He had risked his life to save his classmates and she planned to make sure not one of them ever forgot it. He deserved their respect and she was going to make sure he got it. He already had hers. Why had it taken her so long to see what Reese hid behind those glasses? She had been so unfair to him. She had judged him so unfairly. She had apologized to him last night but she knew he didn’t understand the reasoning behind it. That was the main reason she had wanted to see him today. She wanted to talk with him about last night and everything that she’d learned about herself. She wasn’t sure why it was so important for her to come clean with Reese, but it was. Her dream last night had told her, he would understand. Her dream had told her that he wouldn’t hold what she had done against her. Her dream had also told her that by telling him what she had done, it would bring her closer to him. For some reason, that fact was the most important to her.

“Kay,” Miguel said interrupting her thoughts. “I –“

She shook her head. “It’s okay, Miguel. At one time I would have wanted you to kiss me, but things are different now.”

“Because of Reese?”

“Yes.”

He nodded then backed away from her until his foot hit the bottom step. He swayed slightly and Kay reached out to steady him, which only caused her to fall right along with him. They hit the floor with a thud, Miguel taking the brunt of her fall. She felt him raise a hand to wipe the hair back away from her face and as her eyes met his, she felt none of the emotions she used to feel when she looked at him. Perhaps that was because what she had felt hadn’t been love, but obsession. She knew her obsession had gotten out of hand and because of that she had done something so despicable and so hurtful that she would never forgive herself for it. And of all people she had hurt it was her cousin Charity. Her own family. That made it that much more unforgivable.

“Kay? Miguel?” A voice called from somewhere behind them. “Where did you guys g –“

Kay turned just as a fully dressed Reese stepped into view. The shock and pain on his face was enough to cause her heart to hurt. “Reese,” she said scrambling to get up off Miguel. “This is not what it looks like.”

“What is it then?” Reese asked raising a hand to the back of his neck and locking his eyes onto hers.

“Miguel tripped on the bottom step and reached out to help steady him, but it didn’t work and I ended up falling with him.” She said the words in a rush and she shook her head in the realization that what she said sounded lame even to her own ears. Yet that was exactly what had happened. She begged Reese, with her eyes, to believe her, but she wasn’t at all sure he would.

When he nodded and stepped toward her, she couldn’t contain the relief she felt and without stopping to think about what she was doing, she walked toward him and brushed a kiss against his lips. “Thank you.”

“For what?” He asked pulling back to look into her eyes.

“For believing me.” She said with a smile. “For believing in me too.”

“I’ll always believe in you Kay. I love you. Haven’t you figured that out by now?”

Her smile widened. “I think I finally have.”

Reese smiled then leaned into kiss her. Kay met him halfway more than eager to feel his lips against her own again. She was so caught up in the kiss that she didn’t’ hear Miguel say goodbye or hear him shut the door behind him as he left. In fact, she didn’t even know he was gone until several minutes later, but by then she didn’t care because Reese had her full attention and she knew without a doubt that she had his too.

They spent the afternoon talking and getting to know one another better and Kay felt as if she’d finally found that special someone, the someone that she could tell anything to and he would understand. Because her belief was so strong, she told Reese the reason she blamed herself for the prom night disaster. He didn’t pretend to understand what she told him, he simply did. He understood her feelings toward Charity and toward Miguel. He said he had known she had feelings for Miguel and had no idea how to compete with them. Kay just smiled and told him he no longer had to. She told him of how Miguel had leaned in to kiss her and she had felt nothing for him. She even told him about wishing it were him. Reese didn’t seem to believe her at first, but after she leaned in and kissed him again he seemed to come around.

It had been a long time since she had held someone’s full attention and she had to admit she had missed it. But she knew she never would again. She knew that Reese would always be there for her. She knew that because he loved her and as strange as it sounded, she loved him too. Somewhere deep inside her told her that and she knew in her heart that it was true. She loved him and she didn’t care who knew it. In fact, she didn’t care if the whole world knew it. She was in love with Reese Durkey and she had the good fortune of having him return that love too. Could her life get any better?

A moment later it did, because that’s when Reese pulled her to his chest and brushed his lips across hers. “I love you Kay Bennett.”

Kay smiled then ran her hand through his blond hair and returned his kiss. “I love you too, Reese. I never knew it, but it was always you I was meant to love.”

It was true. Last night’s dream had told her that. Actually, she now knew it wasn’t just any dream. It had been a premonition. A premonition of things to come, because everything in her dream… everything including this very moment had come true. She was in Reese’s arms and it was exactly where she wanted to be. Now if only her dreams of being rich and famous would come true… Kay smiled against Reese’s lips realizing that she was already richer than anyone had a right to be - she was rich in love and that was more important that all the money in the world.
