He had been trained to pilot mobile suits before (his family had connections) and wasn't half bad at it. When the conflict broke out he found himself joining the ranks of Maelstrom. Although he was a newtype himself he really didn't care one way or the other about placing them in positions of power, he basically just needed to defend himself and other newtypes from the attacks of the Carthasis, so called paladins of the human race. Ken is a kind, merciful man and especially likes the "no killing" principle that Maelstrom lived by.
