Jane Austen Has anyone else read Jane Austen's books ('Pride & Prejudice', 'Sense & Sensibility', 'Persuasion', 'Mansfield Park', and 'Emma') and/or seen the movies based upon them?My mother & I read 'Pride & Prejudice' about a year ago. Then we watched the movie 'Sense & Sensibility' & we were hooked! (Even my daddy enjoys the movies, though he doesn't read the books). Miss Austen's stories are very feminine, quaint & dainty. My favourite is 'Persuasion'.It is an excellent book. In Christ, Emma I know my posts are rather short & sometimes a little dull. I am new to internet message boards.Hopefully,as I get more accustomed to them,my posts will improve. |

Greetings! Emma: By no means are your posts dull or boring! It's a blessing to have you here with us! I've not read Jane Austen's books, yet. However, I have seen some of the movies...Sense and Sensibility (the new version), Pride and Prejudice (the old black and white version), and Emma (the new version). I think my favorite has been Emma! To those of you who have read Jane Austen's books, or seen the movies, which ones are your all time favorites? Looking forward to hearing from you! Blessings, Emilee Elizabeth And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. Galatians 6:9 |

Definitelly, I am 100% sure, A&E's Pride and Prejudice....which is 6 hours long!!! That is my absolute favorite! It is soooo good!!! And stays so true to the book! My next favorite would have to be the Mirimax version of Emma, the one with Gwyneth Paltrov. So good! A Jane Austen fan, ~Krista Edited by: YeshuasTikvah at: 1/31/03 12:01:55 pm |

I love Jane Austen! My favorite is Emma, though I do love Pride & Prejudice....and Sense & Sensibility....and Persuasion I wasn't impressed with Northanger Abbey (the movie) or Mansfield Park (the movie) Maybe the books are better? Blessings, Deb |

For the record, the movie version I saw of Mansfield Park, which was I think the most recent making of the story was very far from being like the book. I barely recognized it! I saw the movie first, then received a large volume with all of Jane Austen's published works in it for my birthday last year from dh. I almost didn't read it, because frankly the movie was a bit offensive to me in some respects and I simply did not feel at all comfortable with it. The book is much better, I am pleased to say. Northanger Abbey isn't my favorite, but I think it was just a really different tone than her others... in it she was poking fun at the gothic novels that had become so popular and the silliness of some girls who read them. I like both the written and A&E movie version of Pride and Prejudice very much. I think the movie helps my sons to see the difference kindness and gentlemanly behavior makes and my daughter is given very clear comparisons between young ladies with graciousness and discretion and intelligence beside those who are indiscrete, easily led, bold, etc. We all walk away knowing what traits we do and do not want to foster and exactly how they appear to others. Miramax's Emma is great fun and shows the playfulness inherent in the written work, but A&E's version sticks closer to the original. I have to be honest... I didn't like the movie of Sense and Sensibility very much since I found Marianne to be just plain annoying. I found myself fostering very little sympathy for her character. The book is good, but I still prefer the other two more. In Him, Mrs. Wanda Whatley |

Neither the book nor the movie 'Northanger Abbey' are very good.I think Miss Austen wrote the book when she was quite young (19?) and it wasn't published until the year after she died.It is not as well-written as her later books (in my opinion, the plot & subject-matter aren't her best, either). I haven't seen the movie 'Mansfield Park'.My parents watched it though;they didn't like it.My mother told me it wasn't anything like the book As for the other movies .....I've seen 'Pride & Prejudice' (three different versions-A&E,BBC & the black&white one); 'Emma' (Miramax version);'Persuasion' (not sure);and 'Sense & Sensibility' (not sure, but I do know that Emma Thompson was the producer & played Elinor).A&E's is by far the best version of 'Pride & Prejudice' that I have seen.It follows the book quite closely & the acting is excellent. I haven't seen A&E's 'Emma',but I thought the Miramax version followed the book well.'Sense & Sensibility' is excellent (both book and movie). My favourite? Hmmmm..... it would probably be a pretty closerace between 'Emma','Sense & Sensibility',and A&E's 'Pride & Prejudice'.Mommy's favourite is 'Sense & Sensibility' (every time we watch one of the others she says 'it's not as good as "Sense & Sensibility" '.).Daddy liked it too,but his favourite is A&E's 'Pride & Prejudice'.My grandfather (Papaw BTW,I love the music on those movies! A couple weeks ago, my dear parents surprized me with the soundtrack from 'Sense & Sensibility'. It is getting very late and I ought to be getting to bed ,so that's all for now. In Christ, Miss Emma R |

I really like Jane Austen. I've only read one of her books, I want to read some others. My dad said he's read most of them and I wouldn't like Northanger Abbey. He's normally a very good judge of books. I have seen Sense and Sensibility (don't know who did it, just know the actresses. Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson) and Pride and Prejudice (A&E). I saw the movie and then read the book (P&P). Unfortunately, I can't watch the movie often, because it is six hours long. And my brothers won't watch it because they think it is too girly. I've seen Pride and Prejudice several times, and I love it!! The book was wonderful, too! I read it once about a year ago, and plan on reading it again as soon as I finish Little Women

Well I think this is the first time I have said anything on this topic which is quite surprising. I love Pride and Prejudice (book and movie) and Sense and Sensibility (book and movie) and Emma (book and Mirmax movie) and Northanger Abbey (book only as my Mom said the movie is no good). I thought that Northanger Abbey was good though she improved in writing. I love Jane Austen however--I have made REgency dresses, hosted a P&P party and I even have Lizzy labels (my sisters have labels from the movie too). I am curious how many people that enjoy Prdie and Prejudice like Wives and Daughters as well? I think it is just as good and it is six hours--very highly recommended. Sadly I have only seen the movie (I know, I know and I do plan on reading it) but love the story. Glad to have fellow enthusiasts. Stephanie |
