Job Stupid California... hard to find a job. Anyway, I just applied to hollywood video a second time (last time was a couple months ago). Please pray that they have an opening and consider me for it... preferably hiring me. And that no problems arise. Thanks. |

Re: Job
Praying for you. I'm looking for a job too, in networking or technical support. Placement service is supposed to be looking for a job for me but doesn't seem to be particularly useful, the only calls I've gotten so far are from my own searching.

Re: Job Praying! Have you tried any temp agencies? They were really good for me, but pretty much require a car.... Eric |

Re: Job Umm... the interveiw itself went well, however.. it turns out they are only hiring for a temporary, two week job. From that, they will pick who they want to keep as a employee. Since taking it requires buying a full outfit (hollywood video wants everything black, but I don't have everything black), not to mention learning how to do everything and setting up carpools (they want to shuttle me to another store 10 miles away half of the time), I'm just thinking it's not worth the trouble. There's a hardware store not to far away which seems like a pretty safe bet for getting a job. I'm thinking about just going after that place, since I don't have to worry so much about transportation or dress code, not to mention that they probably won't do a temporary hiring thing. Any advice? I have until tuesday to decide. |

Re: Job If they are going to train you first at the location that is close, I would take the temp job and then try to get the other job while collecting a pay check. The beauty of a temp job is that YOU can quit without notice just like THEY can let you go without notice. So I'd let them pay me for training while I made sure the other job was mine. But maybe I am just too much of a sneak. Hehehe! Eric |

Re: Job Umm... it's a video rental place... it's not like training will carry over to other stores all that well; and besides, they mostly want me for physical labor (adding a new section onto their store), hence, th 2 week job. there's just the awkwardness of a new job. Besides, since I'm only going for 15 hours per week, and I suspect buying all I need for the dress code will cost around ~$45, and I'll only be making minimum wage (whatever that is nowadays), the first week will only return a little more than my expenses in starting the job. And by then, I'd probably be quitting to go after another job. It just doesn't seem worth the trouble for a few extra bucks. |

Re: Job
Aw. Too bad. I think you might go crazy with boredom in a hardware store. Unless it is computer "hardware".
I found video stores and book stores to be fairly fun and entertaining places to work. Relatively. Eric |

Re: Job Well, since they didn't call, I'm assuming I didn't get the job (they said they would call tuesday if they decided to hire me). I wish I knew what I said that put them off... or maybe they just don't want to hire someone without work experience (bleh, I don't see why it should matter). Oh well. Book store, huh? What kind/size of bookstore to you mean? There is indeed a bookstore right next to the hardware store, but it's a Tower Books, which means they carry porno mags along with everything else. =p That, and I dropped off an application during the summer which they said they would consider when opening appeared in the fall, but I haven't heard anything. I'm thinking hardware is my only choice (not comp hardware, btw) for the time being. Since I don't have a car, I'm limited to places that are accessible, and living in a bad neighborhood, I'm focusing on places that are further away and yet can be reached without having to switch buses (switching buses nearly triples the time required to get somewhere). |

Re: Job I worked in a little Christian bookstore, and then it got bought by a moderate sized chain (5 stores in the county) of Christian book stores. It was fun. Also wierd though, as people would come in the store and somehow assume that I was an authority on theology. I got to borrow books for free as long as I brought them back in a day or two and there were other copies on the shelf. That was the best part. And, I know that I sound like a borken record on this, but is there a "Kelly personel" in your area? Or other temp agency? They will have you take office machine tests and fill out a gob of paperwork, but they are great for getting some work experience and making a little money while you look. Even without a car, it couldn't hurt, though it might be tedious getting signed up. Just a thought, if you'd rather not, then never mind. Eric |

Re: Job Thanks for the advice, but no, I've never heard of that temp agency. However, I haven't thoroughly looked into temp agencies. Been spending my time handling school lately. On the good side of things, I'm killing the curve in physics, am close to the top in calculus, and have over 100% test average in chemistry (I believe). So at least my time isn't utterly wasted. While I'm not working, I'm getting good grades. |

Re: Job Glad to hear it! But not really surprising! You seem like a pretty intelligent and (in my opinion, more importantly) MOTIVATED guy! Competitive too.... Still praying for you though, even when I'm not around on the board for a while! Eric |

Re: Job Hmm... I won't argue intellect, but I've never seen myself as much of a motivated kind of guy. Seriously, an hour is the most I've studied for any of my tests so far. The thing is that most of the stuff comes naturally to me (so far). That doesn't quite apply to calc, however... my comprehension gets lost in all the math and I need to fall back on basic number crunching skills. But like I was saying, I'm not that motivated. =p As of late, I've actually been thinking that's my one main weakness. |

Re: Job I think that you are as motivated as you need to be. I suspect that if you had to study more to get the grades, then you would. But we'll see as you take more advanced level courses. I thought I really liked both math and writing until I took multi-variate Calculus in my freshman year in college. I got through the class, but then changed my major to Journalism and stopped taking math classes after that. I was just not having fun any more. Eric |

Re: Job Multi-variable calc? Huh, I didn't know that was its own class. This is my last semester of calculus, and I'm just getting in to multiple variables (2, 3, haven't done anything with 4, but the pattern seems pretty straightforward). You know.. partial derivatives and all of that. It's not too difficult, but gone are the days when I could look at a function and figure out what it looks like on the spot. =p Good thing it's impossible to draw 4d functions, or else I might be asked to do that. |

Re: Job To renew this thread, I got another interview, this time for a cashier position. It won't be fun standing on my feet all day, but it's work. The interview is tomorrow at 2, so please pray that it goes/went well. <a href="http://www.christiangamer.org"><img src="http://www.christiangamer.org/images/sirnukes.jpg"></a> |
