Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
What type of repair will work to repair holes below rear window short of cutting out panel. The holes don't go up past the trim moulding and most of the trim clips are still intact. Like I said , I don't want to cut the panel out, this is not going to be a concours resto. I have a few ideas in mind but I thought I would bend your ears first. Thanks

Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
hey, in an effort to keep the board somewhat diversified, i'm going to put this down in the "restoration" section.
if i remember right, POR15 has a kit where you can bond in some sort of fiber mat...maybe check them. i'd also like to hear some suggestions since my GTX has the same freakin problem!!!

You could replace the section with a metal patch. I sectionseveral pieces of metal in the corners of the rear window and used a die grinder to shape the metal to the original contour.
Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
Removing the glass, cutting out and sandblasting then welding in new metal whether the whole panel or just small patches is the best way.POR 15 and/or fiberglass is next best.It depends on how much time and $$ you can invest and how nice a job your looking for.I will be needing to do the same thing to my `70 and will weld in new metal as I have the tools and welder to do it.

Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
Theres no rust at all in the corners, just mainly in the middle, If I can get the seal softened up I may pull the glass. It looks like thats the only way to get to the clips anyway. I just dread pulling that glass because the fear of breaking it is overwhelming. But, I guess if I want to do it right, thats what I'm going to do.

Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
hey NAS,
i used some guitar wire and vice grips to saw my way around the back glass seal... worked like a charm....probably works even better with two people!!!!! i just used a long piece and started in the middle on one side, worked my way over and went to the other side.
Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
Use dish soap and water solution to help the glass slide out of the seal.BTW anyone make repro rear window seals for a `70 roadrunner?Year One does not have a listing for one in thier catalog.

Hey Matt, Good idea, but I have one of those fancy window knifes I bought from Snap-on. I just hate using it.
Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
I never liked doing glass either. Most of the shops I worked in had the glass co. do it all so us body guys didn`t have to.

On a 69 your glass should be glued in with urethane. Best bet is to either borrow a cable knife "has a 90 degree blade and a cable attached to the handle to pull with" or just call your local glass company. Most will pull it for you and store it until you are ready to reinstall it. If your lower corners are good you are truly lucky. Most corners are toast and replacements suck in the repro world so you would be left find a good metal worker or perform sugery to a parts car. The panel between the window and the deck lid is available though from Sherman and maybe others. Yes your clips are screwed in and cannot be removed or replaced without removing the glass. Do it right. Concours or not you will regret cutting corners and pinching pennies in this area. Every mopar enthusiast in the world goes straight to the floor pan, trunk floor and rear glass when looking to buy or trade. Good Luck
Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
I agree with scouts here. POR-15 is great but in certain areas of the body remove and replacement is the only way to go in the long run. The potential to have an identical problem farther down the road is pretty good. If the area isn't prepped well enough water migration over time can cause a break up of dis-similar materials.
Sorry if this is way off topic, but everytime I think of removing glass I think of Animal House and John Belushi measuring the window and then smashing it bits with a hammer

I agree with scoutsr2, and rr340. Take the glass out as thats the only way to remove the clips prior to any further work required. Try Metro, and or A& M Softseal for the seals you need. Don't short cut this process as earlier stated, any serious future buyer goes straight to the trunk floor, and quarter panels looking for a poor result of a short cut.
I went the full replacement route and do not regret it in the least.
Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
The glass should be sealed with a butyl-rubber seal. This is similar to what you get from a tube of windshield selant that a glass company uses.A wire can be used to cut the seal with, and the seal can be obtained from NAPA.I would NOT use urethane to put the glass back in with. That stuff sets up very tough and will be hard to remove if the glass ever need sto come out again.
Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
I had 8" holes around my lower window corners, so I am replacing sheet metal. But I have used the POR15 repair kit and it works great. If I hadn't had such large holes I would have used it to repair mine.
Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
The back glass in your RR is glued in by the factory. It is not installed with a gasket. You could go the wire route to cut it out, but that is very tedius. I would also stay away from using a pull knife if you are a beginner. BOOM! There goes the back glass if the urethane is hard and you move at the wrong angle.
If the urethane is factory origional, then it'll probably cut pretty easy. If I were you, I would use a long blade which is basically a utillity blade with a long handle...about 2 feet long. You can get them for around $30.
To cut the glass out, start from the top inside the car and cut on the pinch weld side... not the glass side. You can cut against the glass, but I wouldn't if I were you, because too much pressure and the wrong angle might break the glass.
Once you've cut along the top, cut one side. you can push against the glass for leverage to help the blade cut.
Next do the other side and then the bottom. You would be surprised how strong tempered glass really is!
Just remember, when you almost have it out, it's easy to get over zealous and push too hard. When you have the urethane bonding to a small portion of the glass it makes for a high pressure point.
Sorry about the long post, but if you have any more questions or details you would like to know, please ask. It's really not as hard as it sounds and it sure feels good to tackle a project yourself and learn from it.
Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
Well, A guy with a Coronet needed pics of the rear window corners and clip locations so I sent him some of mine. In return, he sent back detailed instructions on how to R&R the panel between the back window and trunk. So all this info will be a big help. He told me to buy the replacement panel first. So thats what I'm going to do.

Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
A lot of interesting comments. I also have a similar problem with my 70 RR, but may be in more trouble than what I'm hearing here. I actually have significant rust in the package tray area. The U-channel between the filler deck and the package tray is shot. Does anyone know if there are any aftermarket venues for this U-channel or am I stuck to fabricate one like I think I will have to do. Perhaps the best bet is to cut out the package tray out of a donor car if one could be located, but I suppose most will be in the same condition as we are describing. Thanks for listening to my rambling.
Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
I would check out the replacement deck filler panel that is available to see if the channel is part of it.If it is not and you need the package tray piece then you would need to find a good used piece.I have a satellite parts car I can check out to see if that panel is any good.

Re: Just removed lower rear window trim on 69RR, very ugly
I am going thru this problem right now on a 69 RR, the panel is ordered and should be here in a couple of days. I am waiting on the panel before removing the old one. Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks

Jeff,
Any luck looking at the Satellite? I will be junk yarding on Saturday morning and need to know if I need to continue to look for this. Thanks.
