LOTR: THE RETURN OF THE KING
LOTR: THE RETURN OF THE KING

General view – Okay, time seemed to pass really fast and soon an entire year went by and I found myself seated in the theatre watching LOTR: ROTK.

What can I say, this was the best of the lot and then there’s the extended DVD version. Where do I get my hands on that one? Anyhow, the movie was worth watching three times over, so I did. But not on the same day.

Once again, great cinematography and CGI. And deservedly the winner of all thos Oscars, how many were there… nine, ten or was it twelve?

Highlights – The imagery that impressed me –
1.        The Olyphants Way too awesome. Especially Legolas’ dance of death on the back of one of them.
2.        Great shots of the Flying Nazgul.
3.        The Uruks and orcs beating up on Faramir and his merry men..
4.        Eowyn laying about on the witch king and his pet.
5.        The lumbering Trolls and their hammers of destrution.
6.        Gollum and Shelob, Yum!
7.        Aragorn and his undead army. I love watching those green slimed ghouls take out that Olyphant again and again.

Characters and cast
Frodo Baggins – Haw. Wood never looked better than ever, all blue and gift-wrapped in Shelob’s tender mercies.
Samwise Gamgee – Sean Astin, fat hobbit body guard and mentor all rolledinto one. Good show.
Pippin/ Peregrin Took – Allright. This time Pip rocked. His wimpy sogng for Denethor was actually good.
Merry / Meriadoc Brandybuck – So he got to ride with Eowyn. Arrghh!
Gandalf – Ian McKellan. All the more white and full of explosive energy. Still say Christopher Lambert would be my choice as old Gandalf, especially with all those Rayden like bolts and stuff.
Aragorn – Viggo Mortensen. Redeemed from his role in the last film, much better in the battles.
Boromir – Was missed even more.
Legolas – Orlando Bloom. Way better part than in the first two. That’s the way you ride an Olyphaunt.
Gimli – John Rhys-Davies. Wanted more Carnage for him with his Axe! More!

Arwen – Liv Tyler. A song, some tears, a dream, some kisses. Sigh!
Elrond – Hugo Weaving. Wise and worldly, he is not.
Galadriel – Cate Blanchett. Snore more!
Celeborn - Where???.
Saruman – Erm…
Bilbo Baggins – Ian Holm, all that excess makeup, cool!

Eowyn – Miranda Otto. YEEEHAHHH! She rocked. Way to deck, slice and dice Nazgul booty.
Eomer – Karl Urban. Looks good in a warrior’s helm, should have kept it on.
Faramir – David Wenham. Like Faramir. What a wimp.
King Theoden of Rohan – Bernard Hill. Well, he had to die, but why blame the poor witch king.
GOLLUM – Andy Sirkis. As the last time, Gollum rules.
Denethor – John Noble. Wow, this pyromaniac was good. For a while he looked reminiscent of Michael Ironside and Jack Nicholson. Good job.
The witch king – Right. Like he was target practice for shieldmaidens.

In conclusion, I would say that this, the third movie is the best of the lot. Will there be a fourth one, who can say? Er… did they say it was a trilogy. Isn’t there a prequel, a trilogy of prequels?

No! Let’s wait and see, shall we?

Re: LOTR: THE RETURN OF THE KING
I agree. A friend and I were debating about which movie would be best - TT or ROTK. She bargained for TT because they'd have to cut out a lot of good scenes in ROTK - plot/character/time mixing and all that. I personally favored the battle scenes from Tolkien's work, so I really anticipated its showing. And... I was RIGHT! HA! Well technically that's a matter of self-opinion, but in my mind I'm right.

Suppose that says much about my justifications on the outside.

I played Merry and Pippin's Green Dragon song on the recorder and drove my cousin crazy. :ALC

I forgot to mention - I also enjoy the undead army tackling the mumakil. There's this ominous green swarm smashing and crushing into this other dark blob and there's screaming in the background, and Aragorn's just standing in the foreground looking obliviously heroic. My interpretation. I think it's funny. Haha. :CAT

Re: LOTR: THE RETURN OF THE KING
Although I looked forward to this movie, I found it boring. The whole thing seemed rushed and it lacked the energy of the first two.:SLP
It was also anticlimactic the way they edited out three whole chapters of the book; Many Partings, Homeward Bound, The Scoring of the Shire. I mean, it was just the whole events of the Shire being taken and destroyed by Saruman, Nothing that important!:|
I mean, I sat there waiting, enduring the corny crowning of the king:SLP and his subdued reunion with his forgotten love:rolleyes (or thats how it seemed) with the promise of one last eventful tale only to be rewarded with a fast forwarding of events (dictated with a few lines) to when Bilbo and Frodo leave MD. I was not impressed.>:
