Language project
I've been trying to create "proto-Triáni" which would be a language without any inclination or conjugation... But that's been done azillion times. So i want something else.
Triáni should be a mixture of lots of language groups, with the accent lying on arabic, romance, language from where trading and commerce all started. It also needs other language influence though, since trading requires a lot of travelling, so language travels too. Anyone up for the project? basically what we need is people that know different languages.. i know a bit of romance and germanic, but tahts not enough. Someone with a good knowledge of arabic would be handy for a start. And we need celtic, scandinavian, african even, we can use anything we have.
I know Romance & Germanic. I know a _really_ tiny bit of Welsh. um I know the Arabic alphabet, but no Arabic and next year i'll be starting Russian so that might help a bit.
Re: Language project
I wuz thinking - some languages have loads of words that have the same meaning in English, e.g. Inuits have a-hundred-and-something words for different types of snow. We could have a few words (not hundreds ) that have subtle differences in meaning, to do with money and commerce. Just an idea
Re: Language project
Having said that, I like the sounds of Arabic - maybe we could incorporate some of those into the Triáni alphabet - sounds like "3ayn" and "Haa'" (pharyngeal fricatives), "hamza" (glottal stop), etc.
For Haa' you've got to imagine the sound you'd make if your mouth were full of really hot chilli. (i.e. like the English letter "h", except you've got to close down the back of your throat a bit )
3ayn is a voiced version of Haa', so it's kind of like the Dutch letter "g", but pronounced much further down in the throat.
Re: Language project
how about 40% romance 30% arabic 10% Germanic 20% other?
When we've decided on these procents, we must decide exactly what is going to be derived from which language(s). I think with vocab it shouldn't be too strict (unlike esperanto) you just pick a word and transform it a bit till it sounds good, or something. But grammar is another thing... creating a good "combined" grammar won't be easy.

sounds about right

i agree

hmm. d'you think it should be inflected or not? inflection (and mutation) could complicate things, but it also makes it a lot more.. i dunno.. precise.
also, is it going to have irregularities (e.g. irreg. verbs)? i say yes, but not too many, and not too complicated
it must have inflection, this shouldnt be a real "easy" language, then again it shouldnt be too hard. Irreg verbs are cool if they are limited to real common ones like "to be", "to have" and stuff.

Re: Language project
Grammar-wise, I think that basing ourselves on the English grammar is our best bet. English grammar is VERY simple with only a few basic rules... And we could make no irregular verbs which would make everyone's lives easier.
