It struck me hard first and foremost the obvious: that Akkadian was one of the great cultural languages of world history for a period of some 2,500 years, having been the vehicle of the dominant culture of the Ancient Near East. Letīs face it: modern English, the lingua franca of our modern times, has not been important for so long...
I am red-faced with shame for having realized only just now the extent of my ignorance about our lingua franca par excellence...
It is even sadder to consider that Greek and Latin, ancestors of the cultural heritage of the West, have never lost their status. But the depreciation of the Mesopotamian legacy was so great that even I had not contemplated the importance of Akkadian for the ancients.. I even studied Latin and Greek. No Akkadian as yet ... or until the day before yesterday...
Well, ignorance is a step towards knowledge if one is willing to bridge the existing gaps...
Stupidity is another matter...
Shocked at my ignorance though,
Lishtar
