Liberal leading the C of E?
Now I know religion can always be a hot potato in the general running of things. Indeed, Tarl and I had that legendary debate on religion which I w as dissapointed to not see in the classic posts section. Having said that, it didnt appeal to anyone else other than us so I can see Cal's decision.

The most recent headlines in the church is the appointment of Dr Rowan Williams as the new Archbishop of Canterbury, to now lead 70 million Anglicans worldwide. Now normally when a new apointment has been made, there is praise and thanks and we go back to work.

However there has been a mixture of praise and antagonism to this appointment, due to the rather liberal views of Dr Williams. Indeed he is a learned theologian and gifted nidividual, but many of his views seem to challenge not just the Church of England, but also the RC curch too.

For example, many are vexed by his views on the acceptance of ordaining women and gay priests. Not to mention his strong views on the war on terrorism. As the BBC reports "In other controversial stances he has also been critical of the war on terrorism in Afghanistan, and earlier this month signed a letter condemning proposed American action in Iraq."

From a personal standpoint I think that it is good, in some ways, to have such a gifted individual in the church. Indeed, if he come to unite the church and encourage more people to turn towards christ then I suppose we could be happy at this appointment. Having said that, he has yet to full clarify his views and Im waiting for him to give a speech on these issues, so that he can duly listen to and deal with any problems or criticisms he faces.

Any ideas?

I can pretty much guess what you will say Tarl. I think something along the lines of "money grabbing bastards" who steal money and corrupt church and chastise people. :)

You will eventually come to know that you can never guess what I am going to say with any degree of certaincy, Insanedawg...

Is this guy like the POPE, theoretically taking "orders" only from GOD?

Or must he abide by a higher, albeit HUMAN power's wishes???

As far as religion & state go, I think that they should be entirely SEPARATE.

Except in the case of personal injury and actual monetary or property loss, I think a government should keep its nose totally out of church business, and that no demands, beliefs, or practices of any religion or faith be encouraged in any way by a government.

As far as both women and gays becoming priests, I personally don't have any problem with it, but I do belive that the Catholic Church does.

I think that a man ordained as a priest should follow the directions from his chain of command, without exception. I would imagine that the Pope has authority over him, and I think that he should have to recognize this, or get his A$$ out of the building.

As far as I know, the Pope has yet to allow women or gays to become ordained ministers, so the guy should STFU, quit making waves, and go thru his chain of command by submitting an appeal, and leave the important decisions to his direct superior in every case.

Feel free to clarify anything that I may have misunderstood.
