~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Long Time No See Author: Deanna (OKDeanna) Email: okdeanna@yahoo.com ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Chapter One "Hello, Kay." Kay Bennett froze as the familiar masculine voice pierced the air from behind her, making tiny goose bumps break out across her skin and her heart begin to race wildly in her chest. It had been ten years since she had last heard that voice, back when she had been a self-involved eighteen year old that couldn't be bothered with a guy like him. It was surprising what one learned once high school was over and you were placed out into the real world, where you didn't know nearly as much as you always thought you did. She shook her head then swiveled her chair around to face the man standing in the doorway to her small downtown office. The first thing her gaze landed on was a pair of tight faded blue jeans that hugged a pair of muscular legs in a way that did nothing to slow her racing heart. In fact, it sped up its pace. She swallowed hard then slowly raised her gaze upward, taking in the light blue button up that was undone at the top two buttons to reveal a tiny glimpse of the muscular chest underneath, and the couple of days growth of beard that covered a strong jaw. Her eyes continued upward and she was shocked when she found herself staring into deep as the ocean blue eyes, filled with unshed amusement. "Reese." His lips tilted upward the moment she whispered his name and her heart stalled out in her chest as he took a step forward, cutting the room in half with his dominating appearance. "Been a long time. I was afraid you wouldn't remember me." Remember him? She'd never forgotten him. How could she after that kiss he gave her right before he left for college? He had meant to show her that there was more to him that just a pair of geek glasses and a way above average IQ, and he had certainly succeeded. Even now ten years later, she could still feel that mind-blowing kiss he gave her. It had been forever engraved in her memory. She had never received a kiss before or since that could measure up to the one he gave her that day. She mentally shook herself then cleared her throat to answer him. "Of course I remember you. We grew up together. But I am surprised to see you here." "I imagine so." He replied his smile growing wider as he flashed his perfectly white teeth at her. "I don't come home all that often." He shrugged then motioned to the chair opposite her desk. "May I?" She nodded then drew in a deep inward breath as he sat down across from her, bringing his eyes level with hers. "What happened to your glasses? Last time I saw you on television you were wearing them." His brow furrowed for a moment, as if he were trying to remember when she could have last seen him, but then all of the sudden he shook his head and raised a hand to run it through his golden blond hair, no longer slicked back with the god awful hair gel he used to use in high school. "I got contacts a few months ago. I really don't know why it took me so long to see the value in them." She smiled at him then and nodded in agreement. "I know what you mean. There are a lot of things I value more now than I did a few years ago." "Like what?" He asked arching a dark blond brow at her. Kay sighed. "I was just so blind to so many things, especially when we were back in high school. I didn't see things the way I should have seen them and I was pretty one -dimensional in my views of the people around me too. But as they say, we learn as we grow older." "Learned a lot, have you?" "Tons." Kay replied with a quick grin. "Its amazing how much I didn't know." "It always is." Reese answered returning her grin with one of his own. "You weren't the only one that didn't see things for what they were. I was wearing some blinders of my own back in high school. But thankfully going away to college thrust them off of me fairly quickly." "I'm sure the fame you found after college had something to do with it as well." A cloud of some undefined emotion flashed in his eyes giving Kay the distinct impression she had just said the wrong thing. Before she could ask him however, it was gone, replaced by the humor that had been there ever since he walked in. "Fame makes you realize all kinds of things you never saw before." Reese stated in a voice that held a trace of what sounded to her, like bitterness. She wanted to ask him if he was alright, but something told her he wouldn't want to talk about it and so she effectively changed the subject instead. "What brings you by, Reese?" * * * * * Reese Durkee couldn't help but smile as Kay changed the subject. She must have realized the topic of fame made him more than a little uncomfortable. Actually, uncomfortable was an understatement for what was going on inside him the moment she mentioned the fame he had found since graduating from college a little over six years ago. Uncomfortable really couldn't begin to describe his feelings regarding that particular subject. He shook his head then widened his smile as he met the curious brown eyes that had haunted his dreams growing up and sometimes did even now at twenty-nine. It didn't matter that he hadn't seen her in ten years, save a photograph or two that he had found in a few issues of the Harmony Herald that he had been getting mailed to him the last few years. It didn't matter that he could call up any number of women from all over the world and have a date with them at a moments notice. She was still the one woman that could take his breath away and effectively shut down his extensive vocabulary. "Reese?" Kay asked arching a thin dark brow at him. He shook his head then cleared his throat wondering what in the world had gotten into him. He had gotten over Kay Bennett a long time ago. "Sorry, I was just thinking about something." She nodded then repeated the question she had asked a few moments before. "So what brings you by? And please don't tell me you were just in the neighborhood. I doubt very seriously your neighborhood reaches this far." He laughed at that. "No, I am actually here to request your services. I'm looking to buy a house and was wondering if you might show me some listings." "You want to buy a house?" Kay asked astonishment clear in her voice. "Here? In Harmony?" "Yes." He responded a hearty laugh escaping his throat. "Is there some reason I shouldn't want to buy a house in my hometown?" "No it's just…" She shook her head as if trying to get a hold of her thoughts then eyed him, confusion still lurking in her brown eyes, but the business side of her taking over. "What type of house are you looking for? How much square footage? How many rooms?" He smiled realizing for the first time exactly what was confusing her. "It really doesn't matter as long as the house isn't some big huge thing with more rooms than I could ever possibly use. Something simple would suit me fine. I will need a den or some type of room I can convert into an office though." "An office?" Kay asked both brows rising high up on her forehead. "You mean… you're moving back to Harmony?" "Yes." He replied with a chuckle. "Why else would I need a house?" "I just thought that… I didn't realize…" Kay shook her head then gave a small laugh. "I must sound like an idiot. God, I'm sorry. You'll have to forgive me. You caught me off guard." He shook his head, his lips tilting upward into yet another smile. "Don't worry about it. I'm sure it seems kind of strange for me to want to come back here after all this time." "A little bit." Kay admitted. "But it makes sense too. You grew up here. It's only naturally you'd want to come back." "I guess that's true." He said studying her face before averting his eyes to the photos on the shelf behind her. "Wow, is that Jessica?" Kay turned to look then turned back to him, a proud big sister's grin splashed across her face. "Yep, that's Jess. Hard to believe, huh? Who would have figured she'd go and join the police force?" Reese laughed. "I suppose we should have. She was always the one wanting to play cops and robbers when we were kids." "I remember." Kay replied with a light laugh. "She always used to brag to dad about how she'd arrested us for some made up kids crime." Kay shook her head. "I suppose it was obvious even then that she would grow up to follow in our father's footsteps." Reese nodded. "I suppose it was." Kay smiled at him then turned her attention to a desk drawer and opened it to pull out a thick black three-ring notebook. "How about we start looking through these listings and find you a house?" "Sounds good to me." Reese answered scooting to the edge of the chair he was sitting in and leaning over her desk to look at the photos and listings of the houses up for sale, praying to find something that wasn't going to make him feel as lonely as his house in the Hampton's did. Chapter Two Kay slipped the key into the lock of the house then slowly pushed open the door and stepped back to motion for Reese to enter. He looked at her as if he was going to insist she go in ahead of him, but when she arched a brow at him, he gave a small sigh and walked inside. Kay smiled to herself then followed him in, but ended up bumping right into him when he stopped less than two feet from the entry. "Reese!" "Sorry." He replied as he turned to help steady her, his fingers automatically curving around her upper arms. "I just… I love the layout of this room." He released her arms as quickly as he had grabbed them and turned around to begin walking about the room. Kay took a deep breath then rubbed her arms where his fingers had been, trying to stop the sudden tingling sensation working its way across her skin. "So you… you like this room?" Reese tossed a wide smile at her over his shoulder and Kay felt something she hadn't felt in a very long time… butterflies. "I love this room. Don't you? I mean look at the amount of space this room has… and the sunlight streaming in through those windows. It's awesome." "It's very nice." Kay replied turning her head away and hoping to hide the blush rising in her cheeks. Had Reese Durkee really just given her butterflies? She shook her head. "So do you think this might be a house you can see yourself living in?" "Definitely." Reese whispered, the tone of his voice causing her eyes to fly to his. "I didn't think you could get any more beautiful than you were in high school, but… but I was wrong. You're even more beautiful now than you were then." Kay swallowed hard then opened her mouth only to close it again when Reese suddenly winked at her. "I think this is the house I want. Definitely a place I can see myself living in." Kay blinked at the sudden conversation shift then shook her head and gave a quick nod. "I'll let the owners of the house know you're interested and if everything goes okay you should be able to close on it by the end of the week." "That's great!" Reese replied excitement clear in his voice. "How about you let me take you to dinner tonight to celebrate my finding a house?" "Dinner?" Kay breathed out. "You… you want to take me to dinner?" "Yeah, if you don't have plans already. I mean we have a lot of catching up to do." Reese smiled. "Ten years is a long time for friends not to see each other." "Yes it is." Kay replied, jumping as a sudden ringing sound burst through the hair. She sent Reese an apologetic smile then reached inside her purse and pulled out her phone. "Kay Bennett." "Hey babe." A masculine voice greeted causing her eyes to shoot to Reese's in surprise. "Devon." "Got it in one." He replied with a chuckle. "You busy?" "Um, yeah." Kay answered her eyes still fixed on Reese's. "I'm showing a house." "Okay, I don't want to keep you then. I just wanted to make sure we were still on for dinner at my place?" "Uh, dinner? Tonight?" Kay swallowed hard. "Oh god I'm so sorry, Devon. I completely forgot. I was supposed to call you, wasn't I?" Devon laughed causing Kay's eyes to roll closed at how scattered her mind had been since the moment she heard Reese Durkee say her name this morning. "Yeah you were. Don't worry about it. I know how distracted you can get when you're showing someone a house. It's one of the reasons you're so good at your job." "Thanks." She replied finally finding the courage to open her eyes again. They immediately locked with Reese's curious blue ones. "Um, Devon I -" "Can't talk right now." He sighed. "Call me when you get back to the office and let me know about dinner?" "I will. Promise." "Okay." Devon responded. "I love you." Kay turned to look out one of the huge bay windows that dominated the spacious living room, not completely understanding why she suddenly felt so uncomfortable talking to Devon. "Me too." Kay hit the off button on her cellphone then jumped in surprise when she raised her eyes and they connected with a pair of deep blue eyes standing less than six inches away from her. "Too bad you already have plans, I was really looking forward to catching up. Oh well. I guess we'll have to do it some other time." "I'm sorry, Reese, Devon is… Well, we're… Devon and I are…" She stopped and took in a deep breath and when she would have voiced the words she couldn't seem to say, Reese did it for her. "Dating? Involved?" Reese arched a brow. "Lovers?" Kay blushed. "Dating. Devon and I are dating." "Exclusively?" Reese asked taking another step forward, a flirtatious smile on his face and a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. "Um…" Whatever Kay would have said died on her lips the moment Reese raised his hand and moved a lock of hair back off her face, gently tucking it behind her ear just as he had done ten years ago when he had kissed her goodbye. "Reese?" "I missed you." Reese whispered his eyes locked onto hers, stealing her thoughts. "I tried not to, but I did. Did you… did you ever think about me, Kay? Just once. Did you ever think about what might have happened between us if you had ever given me a chance?" "Reese." She started trying to avert her eyes but unable to due to the fact that she was being held captive by his emotion filled blue gaze. "I'm not the same person I was back then. I've changed." "I know." He replied his lips tugging upward at the corner, showing off the dimples in his cheek that were barely visible beneath the stubble on his jaw. "I can see it in your eyes. I always thought they were the windows to your soul. I'm glad to see that much hasn't changed." "Why are you here?" Kay asked suddenly needing to know the answer. "Why did you really want to come back to Harmony after all this time?" The smile that broke out on Reese's face could only be described as heartbreaking. "Haven't you already figured that out yet? I came back for you, Kay, I came back for you." * * * * * Reese watched the emotions run rampant across her face and for a moment he almost regretted the fact that he had been so honest with her, but then something flickered in the deep depths of her gold-flaked brown eyes and he knew that no matter what happened, he was not going to regret taking the chance he had promised himself ten years ago he would one day take. He had tried to tell himself that he wouldn't still feel anything for her, but the moment he had walked into her office this morning and seen her long brown strands touching the manila file folders she was bent over reading, he had felt the same catch in his throat and the same tightening in his chest. And when he spoke and she swiveled her chair around her brown eyes meeting his blue, he had felt the same jolt of heat rush through his body that he had the last time he had seen her. But how could that be? After all the pain she had caused him during high school, pretending to be interested in him just to make Miguel jealous… how could that all have been erased with one goodbye kiss that was supposed to have gotten her completely out of his system, but instead embedded her so deep inside his soul that he was still feeling much the same way he felt ten years ago? "Say something." He pleaded hating the desperate tone in his voice, but knowing there was no way he could hide it from her. His emotions where she was concerned had always been impossible to turn off, which was one of the reason she intrigued him so damn much. "Say something or else I'm going to kiss you again." Her eyes widened a bit, but she made no move to speak. In fact, unless he was completely crazy, which given what he had blurted out a few moments before was a rather distinct possibility, she had moved closer to him. He smiled at the thought then slowly began to descend his head toward hers. Just as his lips were about to touch hers, she whispered a word, the one word that managed to bring him back to reality. "No." "Damn." Reese breathed out as he immediately straightened himself back up and put some distance between their bodies. "Kay I… Damn I'm sorry. I don't know what I was thinking." "It's okay." She stated quickly as she took a step backward, putting even more distance between them. "Reese I… I never meant to hurt you. I… I hope you know that." "I do." He acknowledged with a nod. "I do know that." "Good." She said as a rush of air left her lungs. "We'd better go. I need to get back to the office and get started on getting you this house. You do... you do still want it right?" "Of course I do." He replied his smile firmly back in place. "I haven't changed my mind about moving back to Harmony… or you. I should probably warn you now that I'm very stubborn… and very persistent." "And modest too." Kay shot back with a smile. " "Well," He stated with a chuckle. "You aren't the only one that's changed. I've changed too, Kay. More than you know." Kay arched a brow at that. "That sounds like another warning." This time he laughed out loud. "Maybe it is. The question is what are you going to do about it?" To Be Continued... Edited by: OKDeanna at: 12/8/06 7:35 pm |
