~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Love Remains Written by: Deanna (OKDeanna) Email: asjfan@cox.net ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Complete Short Story "She's gone, Luis." He whispered, his eyes locking onto those reflected in the mirror before him. "She's gone and she isn't coming back." Closing his eyelids against the pain that shot through his heart upon voicing the words he knew he had to face, Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald shook his head and slowly backed away from the bathroom counter. When his back hit the wall behind him, he lifted his lids and wasn't at all surprised to find a single tear traveling down his cheek. He'd tried being strong. He'd tried to pretend as if everything was okay. As if she was merely on a vacation instead of…he shook his head again. Still unable to lend thought to the words he knew he someday would have to face. It was easier to think of her as just being gone. He could face those words easier than he could face the truth. Tilting his head toward the ceiling, he slowly allowed his body to slide down the length of the wall, until he finally met with the cold floor beneath him. He missed her so much. If anyone had told him two years ago that he would be so in love with her that the mere thought of living his life without her would cause him this much pain, he never would have believed them. But they would have been right. He'd spent weeks praying she would someone come back to him. That she somehow, by some miracle, had survived the explosion that had wrecked havoc on his life. That she was out there somewhere and someday soon she would come back to him. She would come back home. Yet it didn't appear as if that were ever going to happen. She was gone and he was left alone, alone to face another lonely night. "Why did you leave me? Why did you leave me alone?" Lowering his head until his chin rested against his chest, he allowed his lids to once again fall shut and yet another prayer escape his lips. "God, I know you already gave me a miracle. And I'm grateful to you because of it. I had the chance to tell her I loved her. I had the chance to show her I loved her. And I know I have no right to ask for another miracle when so many other people could use one, but I'm asking you for one anyway. Let her come back to me. Let us have the forever I promised her we would have. I'm begging you. Please bring her back to me." Another tear slipped down his cheek and just as he reached up to brush it away, a bright white light flashed beneath his lids. Opening his eyes, sure he was imagining the sudden warmth filling the air around him, he sucked in a deep breath when his eyes connected with the azure blue eyes of a little girl that couldn't be more than ten years old. "What…?" "I'm sorry you are in so much pain." The little girl whispered, the bright light surrounding her giving her an ethereal appearance. "My heart goes out to you. To you and to Sheridan." "Sheridan?" He asked, confusing marring his face. "Isn't Sheridan…Oh my god, she's alive, isn't she? Sheridan is alive. Where is she? Where…" "Have faith, Luis." The little girl said, a small reassuring smile breaking out across her face. "You must have faith. Hope is not lost. It lives within you. Don't lose sight of that. All is not lost. Love remains." He started to ask her about Sheridan again, but he suddenly blinked and in the split second his eyes were shut, the little girl vanished. Vanished as quickly as she appeared. But the warmth she brought with her remained. The warmth and the faith he'd somehow lost sight of in the last few weeks. Love remains. He'd been right. Sheridan was out there somewhere. She was alive and she was going to come home. He could feel it. She was going to come back to him. God had granted his miracle. He knew it. Sheridan was coming home. And he knew exactly what she would find waiting for her - him. He'd wait as long as he had to wait because he now knew love was going to lead her home. Home to him and everyone else that loved her and cared about her. The little girl was right. Love did remain. And he knew it always would. The End
