MIdwinter in Mesopotamia
So, Midwinter appraoches for those of us in the Northern hemisphere. Life in the ANE was very different than it was for us at this time of year- while we shiver in the midst of a barren land, they were enjoying the cooler, moist weather and the fertile time of year.
How do you celebrate this time of year? Personally, I strive for relevance. Rather than bend my celebrations and observances into accord with the Mesopotamian seasons (as do many neopagans with the northern European seasons) I observe the seasons around me. I listen to my body and my Higher Self.
It's bleeding cold where I live (Texas) and only going to get colder as Winter comes in. I focus at this time on getting adequate sunlight, seeing to my health, and staying warm warm warm. I see Winter as a time of withdrawal, of internal progress. This time is, for me, about looking inward, caring for myself & loved ones, and nesting.
This year I am making a few changes; I just started a new regimen of herbs which will, it is to be hoped, help mend my health. I am hoping to stick with exercise throughout the Winter and keep myself motivated. And of course, I want to avoid the traditional holiday weight gain!
Does anyone have any info on what our spiritual ancestors, the people of Ancient Mesopotamia, were doing this time of year? And what will *you* be doing?
