Character's Name: Glorfindel

Major, minor or original chacter? Major

Race: Noldo

Age: Roughly 4,000

Occupation: Woodworker/Woodcarver

Description: Glorfindel- goldtress his name meaneth, and rightly so, for his hair shone like a wheat field basking in the mid-day sun. He was most beloved of the Gondothlim, save for his friend Ecthelion mighty Lord of the Fountain and also captain to the king. In his face one could behold the light of Valinor, yet undimmed by countless years in Middle Earth; a faded memory of the two trees carried by all that had danced in their glory. There also lingered a beauty enriched by age and sorrow but crowned by wisdom. Tall he was, with keenly bright blue eyes, and oft on his face there dwelt a smile forged by mirth and joy. Even in his exile the great elf lord found happiness, although he was saddened by the fate of his people, but his loyalty to the king he would hold even if it meant his very end. And this, as all things, he did in good faith

Biography:

Of Glorfindel and Nurial

Glorfindel of Los loriol- a very old story passed down by many a gnome. It recounts the tale of Glorfindel the son of a Noldo father and a Vanya mother. Many had thought the story lost, a thing of myth and legend only to be remembered by his most poignant deeds and actions, but in Valinor it is still told. And now I shall recount it for you in full.

Born in the blended light of Telperion and Laurelin, Glorfindel was the son of Lord Eltiron and Lady Alcarinian. His parents had met in Tirion upon Tuna while the Vanyar and Noldor still dwelt together in friendship. Both were of noble blood and held a distant kinship with Lord Fingolfin. It was through this family relationship Glorfindel later came into the service of Turgon. Alcarinian also bore a second son but little is said of him, other than there was a great love between the two brothers.

The family home adhered to the Noldor way of life in every respect. Their ideals, customs and principles were the predominant force in the household. Alcarinian had accepted this as the way of things once she had wed Eltiron, and in doing so there was little friction between the parents. But even with all the influence of the Noldor, Glorfindel remained more like his mother in nature and mood, except in battle. On the one hand the elf lord had the wisdom, patience and the playfulness of the Vanyar, but on the other his blood surged with the power and skill of the Noldor. It was a deadly mix for those who opposed him, but for those he loved they found only understanding and compassion.

When the lord was still young he tried many crafts and arts, but found no greater love than when he painted and worked wood. Fine things he could make with his hands: pictures that captured the pristine beauty of Valinor or the delicate snow that lay upon Taniquetil’s slopes, or furniture so intricate it seemed too delicate to use, yet it was strong enough to withstand the ages. Little heed did Glorfindel give to other pursuits. He continued to create things more beautiful than before until he became a master of his hobbies.

During a family celebration, Glorfindel met Lady Nurial of the Vanyar. She held a distant kinship with Glorfindel's mother Alcarinian. Glorfindel and Nurial became vast friends and their parents being both forsighted and wise agreed the couple should marry when they were of age. But as the years passed and the shadow lengthened Eltiron came to Glorfindel and told him it was time to focus his mind elsewhere and think not of marriage. The young elf obeyed but his heart remained forever with the Lady Nurial.

Eltiron was not foresighted, however his wife Alcarinian could sense such things that would indeed come to pass. She bade him to stay out of all matters that concerned the House of Finwe, but Eltiron refused to ignore the affairs of his people.

In the years to come much unrest occurred in Valinor, and this was a grave thing to Glorfindel. The lies of Morgoth had started and soon there was a split in the house of Finwe. His brethren began to take up arms, became proud and arrogant, but nothing saddened him more than when he was asked to do the same. After Feanor was banished and Fingolfin remained behind, Glorfindel along with father chose to serve the newly appointed king under Turgon. They did this out of loyalty for their kin, but also out of pity. It had appeared to many that Finwe had chosen one son over another since he went into exile with Feanor, and to Glorfindel and his father this seemed most wrong. In their house everyone was loved with equal measure and how a father could choose one son over another was beyond comprehension to either of them.

In the year 1495 the two trees were destroyed and Finwe, the King of Noldor had been slain in Formenos. It was also the last time Glorfindel would ever walk upon the jeweled laden beaches of Valinor, or paint scenes from the fair city of Tirion. The war had begun.

Glorfindel, like so many others followed his king into exile. But to his dismay all his family followed even when he counseled against it. His father was a firm believer that they should remain together at all costs, and indeed it came at a great price. After the incident with the Teleri, in which Glorfindel and his family had no part, they continued on and started the journey over the grinding ice. It was here his father, mother and brother perished, and with much reluctance Glorfindel carried on guiding the people of the House of the Golden Flower. He knew his people needed the strength of a good leader as they faced the perilous journey to Middle Earth. But even so the grief had become so intense that Glorfindel was in danger of dying. However, Ecthelion, Lord of the Fountain would have none of it. His stubborn nature led them both over the ice and onto the warm beaches of Middle Earth.

Once Glorfindel returned to Middle-earth permanently after the destruction of the one ring he married Lady Nurial of the Vanyar. Two hundred years later the lady gave birth to their first and only child Thalion.
