New member has a question about shot placement
A lot of people tell me the front and mid-shoulder section is a good place to shoot a boar because of the vitals. However, I've heard horror stories about high-power guns not penetrating the "shield" that covers this section of the shoulder. Is this true or is it simply poor bullet selection (such as ballistic tips)? Also, I've been told that Russian boars have thicker shields than feral boars. So the more Russian genetics in a hog, the thicker the shield. Having said that, do you think a 30-06 with a 165gr big game bullet will penetrate the shield of a 350-400lb+ Russian boar that may have 2-4" thick shields?
One last question. If using a bow, is the quartering-away shot the best option or would the neck shot, which so effective with a gun, work with a bow as well? Thanks.

For a bow and I may be wrong here as I have never shot a hog with a bow I would think a quatering away shot would be best. Also the rifle an bullet you mentioned will work. I would recomend a head shot though. But a shoulder shot will harvest a hog also. Possibly more work involved that way though.

on a hog i think the quartering away shot is best with a bow.if you shoot at the shoulder just shoot low.with a rifle we shoot behind the ear.every hog i have shot behind the ear and dropped
Shot placement.
I always got for low behind the shoulder if they are standing still - gives a bit of leeway for error. If running I hold on the snout. That's with a 6.5 Swede with 120 Sierra SP's. Hasn't let me down yet.

shield
i use to hear people talk about not aiming behind the front shoulder because of the shield. i use to believe it but then i realized when i was cleaning a hog there isnt a shield there. the hogs vitals are just located closer to the front of the shoulder. My girlfriends dad pointed this out to me and its true. the best shot is to aim for their ear hole. drops them every time.
