By Deanna (OKDeanna) Email: asjfan@cox.net *Written for TGIFF (Thank God It's Fanfic Friday) Challenge #10 Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald did his best to appear interested in the conversations going on around him, but as hard as he tried, he just couldn't seem to focus on what was being said. Instead, his attention kept drifting to the beautiful blond sitting on the opposite side of the room. Sheridan Crane. When he'd found her on the shores of Bermuda, looking every bit the angel from his dreams, he'd thought his prayers had been answered. And they had, technically. They just hadn't been answered the way he thought they would, because instead of the happily ever after he'd envisioned them having upon her reentry into his life, he'd gotten the exact opposite - she'd broken his heart. Again. Oh, he knew it wasn't her fault. Not really. After all, she could hardly be blamed for the fact that she thought he'd cheated on her. That was Julian and Alistair's doing, not hers. No, the only thing she could be blamed for was failing to believe in him when he'd once again told her the truth. He knew he could try again to convince her that there were pieces of her memory missing--like the fact that her family could care less about how she felt or how much pain they put her through--but since Eve warned him of the dangers of forcing her to remember something that caused her such a significant about of pain, he wasn't about to attempt it. Not unless it became absolutely necessary. As he watched his older brother lean in and whisper something to Sheridan, Luis felt another knife slice its way through his heart. He knew Antonio was in love with Sheridan, he could see it written all over his face, swimming in every smile that lit his eyes. But he also knew Sheridan didn't return those feelings. He knew she loved Antonio--or Brian as she continued to call him--but she wasn't in love with him. Not the way she was in love with him. But there was only so much a man could take. Seeing the woman he loved, being romanced by his brother, definitely topped the list. Especially when he knew there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it right now. Shaking his head, Luis slowly pushed back his chair and got to his feet. When Beth shot him a quizzical look and started to rise with him, he sent her a polite smile and explained that he needed some time alone to clear his head. Apparently, she understood because instead of insisting he shouldn't be alone the way everyone else seemed to do these days, she merely nodded her head and turned her attention back to Hank. As he neared the front entrance of the book café, he heard Hank call out his name, but since he was in a hurry to leave, he merely held up hand in a semi-wave and used his free hand to push open the door of the café. The bell above the door gave a tiny jingle and just as he was about to walk underneath it, something compelled him to shift his head toward the tables to his right. His eyes immediately caught and held Sheridan's. Something passed between them. Something familiar and soothing. But then, she blinked, and just like that…the moment was broken. With a rueful smile and another shake of his head, Luis turned back around and made his way out the door. Ten minutes later, he was standing on the wharf, near the spot where he'd first kissed Sheridan. A thousand still-frame images flashed through his mind, but the one that refused to obey his need to forget, was the one image that never left his heart. His mind. It was the image of a man and woman locked in a passionate embrace. An embrace he thought would never end. A passion for each other he thought could never die. Closing his eyes, Luis reached out a hand, his long fingers immediately curling around the dark splintered, wood that separated him from the choppy water below. He could hear the water rolling beneath him, imagined it hitting against the old wooden beams that formed the foundation of the wharf, and wondered if it wasn't some kind of sign. A sign to remind him of - "Luis?" His eyes shot open at the sound of his brother's voice. Antonio was the last person on earth he wanted to see right now. Turning, Luis met his brother's eyes. He tried to conjure up some of the anger he'd always felt in seeing his brother, but tonight there was none. There was only a deep sadness caused by the beautiful blond that never strayed far from his thoughts. Still, he wasn't about to make things easy on Antonio. He might not be angry now, but he knew it would hit him eventually. It normally did anyway. Crossing his arms over his chest, Luis waited for his brother to speak his mind. When it became apparent that he wasn't going to, Luis gave a sigh of frustration and dropped his arms back to his sides, immediately turning his back on the brother he scarcely knew. "What do you want, Antonio?" "My brother back." Antonio answered without an ounce of hesitation. "But since I know you aren't about to make amends with me, I figured I'd settle for the answer to a question that's been running around in my head since…¦well, since Bermuda." Wincing at the name of the island that had taken Sheridan from him not once but twice, Luis slowly turned back around to face his brother. "Ask your question. I can't guarantee I'll answer it, but I'm at least willing to listen." "Why did you take Beth to Bermuda if you still loved Sheridan?" The question wasn't one he'd been expecting, but he answered it without pause. "Because I thought Sheridan was dead and I wanted to prove to myself that I could let her go. Funny thing is, instead of letting her go, I brought her back with me." "But she isn't with you." His brother reminded him. "And if the rest of her memory doesn't come back, she may not ever be with you again." "Do you actually believe that?" Luis asked, his eyes trained on his brother's face, searching for any sign of the real reason for his sudden inquisition. "Do you actually believe what Sheridan and I had is over?" Luis shook his head. "I know you've heard the stories, Tony. They've been all over town since the moment Sheridan came home. Do you honestly think that after everything she and I have been through together that this is how we'll end? Her not remembering what really happened the night of our engagement party? If so then you're deluding yourself." "Sheridan and I will never be over." Luis said, his voice clear and certain. "I don't care if I have to wait forever. I'm not giving up on her. On her or the love we have between us." Antonio held his eyes for a moment longer then averted them to stare out over the horizon. "I love her too, you know. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her." "So is that what this talk is about? You trying to warn that you're going to fight for her?" The moment his brother's eyes shot back to his, Luis knew he'd been right. Fighting for Sheridan was exactly what he planned to do. "The one thing we always swore we would never do is make a play for each other's girl. I never expected us to break that promise, but I also never expected to fall in love with a woman that couldn't remember where she came from or that she was once engaged to my brother. I didn't ask for this situation, Luis, but I'm not about to walk away from it. Not unless that's what Sheridan wants me to do." Luis just nodded. He'd known Antonio wasn't going to give up on trying to win Sheridan's heart just as he knew Antonio knew he wasn't going to give up either. "I'd say may the best man win, but Sheridan isn't a prize to be won. She's a person. She's the woman I love and there is no way in hell I'm going to sit back and let her get away again. I'll fight you for her every step of the way. I don't care how long it takes or how hard I have to fight, I love her, Tony, and I'm not going to give up on her. Not ever." "I didn't expect you to." Antonio whispered, a rueful smirk pulling at his lips. "I just wanted you to know that you're not the only one that loves her. That wants to spend the rest of his life with her. I want that too, Luis, and I'll fight just as hard to make sure I get it." Antonio didn't wait for him to respond, he just turned and did what he did best - he walked away. Luis shook his head again and turned back around to stare out at the choppy water below. Then, for the first time in his life, he wondered how he'd gotten to this point. Was it fate as Theresa always believed? Was it fate that he and Antonio fell in love with the same woman? If it was, and he and Antonio were both destined to fall in love Sheridan, then fate certainly was cruel. Because while they both loved her, only one of them could truly win her heart. Luis only hoped it was him. THANK YOU FOR READING! Author of over 40 fan fiction stories, some of which include:
