Ok, I've had it.
Ok, for those who didn't notice, this board again had downtime. About four hours of it last night (possibly more, I'm not sure when it ended as I went to bed). [EDIT:- and a long outage today as well after I got this post up]

I've decided enough is enough. Ezboard is proving more and more unreliable for us, even though we pay for it.

I took Tiggers advice on starting a new forum, one free from ezboard, and have been busy working out how to use bhpBB forum building software AND get us on a stable host.

Given the downtime, I feel a little forced to introduce: gobbos temporary gate.

I was playing about with this thing for a while, and was going to delete it once I had a properly hosted one up and running. However, this will give us somewhere a little more stable for now (even though it has adverts).

Now we have somwhere to post if Ezboard breaks, or, if you guys are so inclined, we can retreat there for now and wait there for me to create a proper "new 'Gate".

So, the question (as alway) is: What do you guys want?

Do you want to stick it out with ezboard for now and wait for me to create a proper board? (which, given that I need to get a proper host yet, could take a good couple of weeks).

Or do we want off ezboard NOW and wait somwhere else where we won't have the downtime/subject reorganisation we have here?

If we want off, I'll put a 'we have moved' thread in every section. If not, then I'll just post the 'proper' new forum once I've finished on it.

I vote we shove off now, before ezboard does another Yuku-type burp and *really* hoses us. Remember a few years ago when it lost all our threads (including most of "Antarctic Weather") and couldn't restore most of them?

Yup, agree.

And I also suggest we affiliate with a 'feeder' site to get some more fresh blood into the Gate (*cough*TigersofVeda*cough*)

Ok, then I popose this:

We all shove onto my new site, but let the topics still going here peter out.

The new site is open as of now. You can start registering. Any problems, post here or email me on thechosengobbo -at- hotmail -dot- com

I'm in a bit of a rush right now, so I'll sort out the 'we have moved' threads tonight.

Heres that link again start the 'legacy' threads I'll sticky them tonight as well. Mods on here get mod stats there too.

I'll keep you updated on the 'new forum' while we're there.

Has anyone been in contact with Magick? Technically this is his baby at the moment despite his absentee status, we should do him the courtesy of letting him know what is going on if we have not already.
:)

Edit: I have taken my own advice and tried sending Magick an email updating him on what is going on. Not sure how good the email address is but notice has been given at least.

How do we want to proceed with any migration?

Re: Ok, I've had it.
I have copied a return email from Magick below:

Hey,

Sorry, I haven't been able to get on as much as I used to, thanks to work, my time has been spent either there or sleeping. But as of last week Psi and I have switched to new positions and as I understand it, he is getting internet today. I had wanted to move The Gate for awhile now, but at that time the majority consensus was to keep it there. With this new info, then i will pursue my original plan and get The Gate moved to another server in which we will finally have a web address that will be just the Millenium Gate.

thanks for the heads up and I will spend the next week getting stuff together and possibly switched over by the week after.

Josh (Magick)

Based on this we should probably wait a bit to see if this pans out before migrated to Gobo's alternative site but I applaud his proactive efforts to aid the community. It is greatly appreciated.

Re: Ok, I've had it.
Taken that the Gate and EZ boards are not on the same terms anymore, I have already started getting the ball in motion today.

I've been making phone calls to a few friends of mine who do this sort of thing for a living and finding out prices from them.

As well as checking out a few other places online. Once I get something settled in then I will post a thread here of the new place for everyone to go and see what I can do about keeping as much from this place as possible.

I know for the most part people are going to be made about losing their post count and such, but it's either start over or deal with the Yuku/EZboard fiasco we have been having trouble with. Have patience and all will be well. I hope.

So with that, I am off to find a new home for this place again.

People shouldn't be worried about their post count. That is just silly. If it is such an issue for them however, any of the big forum softwares have the ability to change a persons post count.

Vbulletin, phpBB and IPB (what I recommend) all have this ability.

It's god to see you back Magick. Nice to have a voice of authority again.

Looks like I don't need that board then, I'll just delete it.

As long as we get off this cruddy ezboard soon I'm happy.

I'll help cover too if you like. Will there be a "pay here" function on the new 'Gate?

Re: cash requirements
Magick - send me an email if you need any set up help with the IPB stuff. They have a fairly user friendly AdminCP.

Not knowing how magic is setting this up -- hosting his own forum on a server or having IPB host the forum and just pointing the domain at it -- there are several options for helping to pay for the site.

If Magic is using their hosting it isn't more than what you guys were paying for a year of ad-free EZBoard. Difference with IPB is that there are no ads and you get technical support for your money, plus free upgrades and all that other stuff.

There is a subscription option that can be turned on as part of registration. This doesn't require anyone to pay anything but gives them the option to choose to do so.

Alternatively there are some very easy mods to set up that will put a paypal donation point on the site.

Or he can even just pin a "Donations Box" thread with his own info in there.

Re: cash requirements
Thanks Kurgen, I will drop you a line in the next few days. Right now I am stuck in the waiting period as they get everything set up. Tried to get into my Control panel today, but the addy isn't even working yet.

It said it may take 48 hours for the set up. So i will try again tomorrow.

As far as the payment thing.. I appreciate the help, when everything is up and running I will probably fix it up with a sort of donation box. As Kurgen said, it won't be much more than we were already paying, but with more perks.

I also appologize for being gone so long, work has been my main mode. Now that Psi and myself have switched positions, there is more time during the day to do things and get stuff done. so I am back and ready to fix things. ;)

Sure, Kurgan doesn't care about his post count, but I was just over 100 away from breaking 5000!

Seriously, it's time to cut the cord, thanks for all the hard work, Magick and Gobbo.

Yeah, I had the bad luck that the last several times I visited the "old" Gate that the site seems to not exist. I'm looking forward to whereever we move to so long as it isn't ezboard/Yuku.

Well I hate to see you go Tank, but hopefully you won't be a stranger when the new place is up.

I look at it this way... it's a fresh start for everyone. The number of post doesn't make you any less of a member or more of a member. It is like a medal showing how long you have been around, but medals can be reearned. ;)

Is there a more menacing face?

Can't wait for the move, I'd be glad to help out with the cost a bit.
